The Stonington archipelago has many route options, so after a safety briefing, we'll have a look at the chart together, and keeping in mind the weather and tidal currents, come-up with a plan for the day. Usually we'll paddle some version of the 'Archipelago Arc' a route strategy that enables us to paddle an 8 to 12-mile loop among the islands, while staying within 2-3 miles from our launch. We'll paddle about an hour at a time and take breaks on islands along the way, looking for a good lunch spot. Some islands have idyllic pocket beaches, while others have great granite slabs, erratic boulders and hiking trails with stunning views. If the group is in the mood for a swim, we can stop at a freshwater quarry pond for a refreshing (warmer than the ocean) dip. If desired, we can pause to learn or refine paddling skills.
Other things to note
This trip is suitable for novices or more experienced paddlers. We provide any needed instruction. Tandem or single kayaks are available. We paddle rain or shine. In wind or fog we'll seek the most sheltered routes, but if winds or sea conditions are more than we want, we'll cancel the trip.

I've been a sea kayak guide and instructor here on the Maine coast for nearly ten years, mostly paddling in the Stonington archipelago. I'm an artist with a small studio-gallery in Stonington, and I draw inspiration from my sea kayak experiences. In 2017 my husband and I spent nearly two months paddling over 600 miles along the Maine coast, camping on islands along the way, which you can read about in an upcoming book that I am illustrating.

Michael Daugherty, my husband, is my co-host, sometimes assisting with guiding or getting us launched. He’s also a Maine Sea Kayak Guide, and an ACA L4 Sea kayak instructor who has written articles and books about sea kayaking.

We'll start in Webb Cove at a campground that has a public launch. Webb Cove is home to a fleet of lobster boats as well as a loading area for an island granite quarry, but we'll soon head-out to the Stonington archipelago, a Mecca for sea kayakers with some 60-80 islands, many of which are public and part of the Maine Island Trail. We'll craft a route based on the group's interests and the weather; each island is individual as is every trip.
