Learn to play the traditional Japanese musical instrument "KOTO", and enjoy tea ceremony experience, delicious green tea and seasonal Japanese sweets!
^^^^^^^^^^^^
The traditional Japanese stringed instrument, the koto, is renowned for both its healing tones and elegant shape. During this workshop, you will have a chance to play the koto and hear and feel for yourself the echoes of antiquity that ring in each note of this beautiful instrument.

First, I'll explain about the history of Koto. Koto has long histroy. And I play the classical Koto song for demonstration.
Next, let's learn the tuning of Koto. This instrument has various tunings of scales, but this time we will make a basic tuning together.
And next, let's learn how to read the score. It is a unique score that is completely different from the Western score.
Then, put the finger picks of Koto and play it together. Feel the beautiful sound you make and enjoy Japanese song!

After playing the koto, you will be served matcha green tea and seasonal Japanese sweets in a tea ceremony by a master from the Urasenke tea school. It is a home-like tea ceremony, so let's relax and chat.

Spend an emotionally fulfilling time with me in this calming environment to creatively explore and stimulate all five of your senses. We have prepared a variety of workshops which allow participants to explore and hone their five sense

Hi I'm Yumi. I'm a Koto performer and composer. I'm a teacher of Koto and shamisen and also master of tea ceremony of Urasenke school.
I believe that Japanese traditional culture has the power to make people's mind peaceful and to heal tiredness. Then I've started activities that people in the world can enjoy Japanese culture.
When I was young, I founede an information technology company. In those days I was so dedicated to my work I took the last train home every night. At the time, my consolations were practicing the koto harp and the tea ceremony. I was able to forget my problems and free my mind, which refreshed me. I got hooked on that pleasant feeling. The more deeply I studied them, the more the rich world of Japanese culture enchanted me.

I'd like to introduce such a wonderful experience and enjoy it together!

Uza kube uphi

This cultural experience is set in a cozy Japanese l house. It is surrounded by the seasonal beauty of Kyoto. Our house is not a place where many tourists visit, but it is a homely and relaxing place, as if invited by a friend's house in Kyoto. Rather than being a luxurious tourist destination, you will be able to get a glimpse of the ordinary Koyoto people's lives.

An unforgettable experience for any musician or music lover! I also loved the more casual tea ceremony, which was a wonderful way to end our time. I'm very glad I made this a part of my first trip to Japan.

Yumi introduced us to this beautiful instrument in her lovely home. She was welcoming, gave instructions in clear English, and her passion for the Koto shined through it all. Highly recommend!

Yumi went above and beyond on this experience - from letting us come on a date which wasn’t initially available to getting a birthday cake for my daughter (we went for her 8th birthday). Yumi’s home is in a quiet residential neighbourhood and is so calm and lovely inside. We started with tea and chocolates and chatting to get to know Yumi then we did the harp experience which was so fun and educational. We then had another cup of tea with aforementioned birthday cake and were joined by Yumi’s friend and got to know them both a little better. Then back upstairs where our daughter was dressed in a kimono and we were led through a casual tea ceremony with MORE sweets! The whole experience was intimate, calming, interesting, enjoyable and very suitable for our family of 4 (included an 8&11yr old) and highly recommend it for anyone looking for something out of the ordinary and off the beaten path.

I had a wonderful experience learning all about koto and attending the tea ceremony hosted by Yumi. Beside introducing me the various playing techniques and teaching me how to play the song sakura sakura, Yumi also introduce the history of koto and perform a part of a famous piece for me. Yumi is really multi-talented. I love the tea ceremony she demonstrated to me as well, felt really peaceful and rejuvenated after the session and she served me really delicious japanese tea cakes too. Overall, it's an amazing experience, i learn alot whether about koto or tea ceremony. I would love to book another experience with Yumi in the future when I return to Kyoto.

If you want to experience something different and learn about japanese Koto I highly recommend this lesson. Yumi-san was a great teacher and had a lot of knowledge about koto and tea ceremony so I enjoyed every minute. After a warm welcome I got a short lesson about the history and different koto styles. We went right into tuning and playing the koto and Yumi-san was really patient with me. The tea ceremony gave this experience a wonderful, relaxing ending.
