Into oza kuyenza

38 million people live in the greater Tokyo region. It is a high energy, high density, high stress city.

So where do Tokyo people go when they need to unwind? If you’re a mountain person, the answer is Hakone. If you prefer the seaside, the answer is Atami. And if you love onsen (hot springs), the answer is both.

In this online experience, I will use videos, photos and story-telling to show you these two beautiful towns an hour or so to the west of Tokyo.

First, we’ll visit Hakone, taking a tiny rattletrap railway up into the mountains, then switching to the cable car to lovely Lake Ashi, with its wonderful view of Mount Fuji. On the way we’ll stop at Owakudani, a highly volcanic site with a geyser, and check out the popular black boiled eggs.

Deep in the forested mountains of Hakone are some beautiful hot spring inns. I’ll show you a couple of them, including the scenic “rotenburo” (outdoor baths).

For part 2, we’ll go back down to Odawara and head on south along the east coast of the Izu peninsula. Atami is the first of many hot-spring towns in Izu. It combines a laid-back seaside ambience with some neon nightlife. Atami also has highly medicinal hot springs. I will explain the etiquette you need to know for correct onsen bathing.

One day, the Coronavirus pandemic will be over and you may visit Japan. I promise you that Hakone and Atami will be on you must-see list!

I was born in Atami, on August 5. That happens to be the day of the Atami Grand Fireworks Display -- so I am a true Atami girl. The winters are short and mild. As a child I grew to love the January plum blossoms and the Atami cherry blossoms of March. And the summer fireworks, of course!

Later I lived twenty years in Odawara, the castle city that is the gateway to Hakone. I love to go to Hakone when I need peace and relaxation. A hike in the mountains followed by an outdoor hot-spring -- that is the perfect Tokyo getaway. I have guided many visitors to Hakone with my face-to-face experience.

On Airbnb I also do Japanese cooking classes, in person and on-line. Check out my "Dancing on the Dough" ramen cooking class!

This experience is precious! I am happy and grateful Manami and Roger created this experience on Airbnb. First of all, who doesn't like to see beautiful photos of relaxing Japanese hot springs surrounded by nature. Secondly, Manami and Roger really know their topic and carefully curated information for this experience. I am taking away many practical tips. Plus, Roger's little show and tell at the end was quite a joy.
