To begin our experience we require everyone to sign a liability waiver since this is a honey bee sanctuary. We will go over bee yard etiquette and get dressed in protective bee yard attire. We will take a stroll to the honey bee sanctuary and see bees pollinating the Tulsi basil flowers and others along the way. When we get to the apiary, we will learn how to light a smoker and begin a hive inspection demonstration. During this time we will identify honey, pollen, nectar, eggs, brood, queen bee, worker bees, drone bees, pests and much more. We will also closely examine bee biology and the ecology in the hive body. Depending on the season we may even be fortunate to catch a swarm, harvest honey, or make a split if it is needed. Hive tutorials can be customized to focus on certain aspects of beekeeping such as split making, in-depth pest management, correcting cross comb, ect. if needed. We will conclude our hive time together by walking the tools and buckets up to the processing kitchen. There we will honey to sample as well!!
Other things to note:
Inform us of any allergies you may have to bees or pollen before arriving on our property. A liability waiver must be signed before leaving our carport area since bees are abundant on our property.

I have offered beekeeping classes and workshops on the Big Island for ten years. I specialize in treatment-free hygienic beekeeping. My partner & co-host, John Lair and I offer honey bees, natural-cell queens, top bar hives, and pure hive products. I teach an 8 class course at the University of Hawaii~ Hilo which covers bee biology, hive ecology, hygienic hive management and much more. John and I co-teach two apiary days as part of this course. We love to teach together and share our passion for bees and their creations with others.

Amazing experience. We learned so much about bees and nature’s impact on them. I could listen to Jen talk about bees all day!

Jen is super knowledgeable about honeybees and passionate about story telling. I felt very safe during the tour and learned a lot about her business.

It was great to learn about bees and now we know more about how to purchase honey in future. Jen provided us with all protective clothing and it was very interesting to learn more about bees, how to care for them and how important to be more knowledgeable about pestesides we use for grass and flowers (Jen doesn’t use any and her honey tastes amazing) We purchased a few jars of honey and will order more for sure! If you are in Hilo, definitely come and see Jen, her bees and her beautiful farm/garden.

Jen is knowledgeable & is also an amazing person. We learned a lot about bees & saw for ourselves the harmful effects pesticides have on them. Definitely a great experience.

We had a wonderful experience with Jen and her bees (as well as her sweet dog). Jen was very knowledgeable and shared information about bees and fun stories. We learned a lot and had a great time. My wife and I felt very comfortable with the bee suits that Jen provided us and we were able to get closer and be more involved than I would have thought possible. This is a very unique experience and I would recommend it to anyone that has an interest in bees.

This was an eye opening and unique experience. To start, the instructions to arrive are clear and easy. The farm is on a beautiful slope on Mauna Kea. We were greeted by Jen and her friendly dog and where provided with two full body veils. Jen was very personable and allowed us to pick the hives we worked with. She showed us how to handle a hive, interesting signs and structures to looks for, and pointed out the queens, drones, and worker bees. In general it she was extremely informative and answered any and all questions we had. Personally I felt very comfortable even though I had never handled bees before. My girlfriend and I were able to hold one of the sections of the hive and could take plenty of photos and videos. This experience really is unique. If you are interested at all with bees or just want something more down to earth to do, I could not recommend this enough. Plus the honey you get to take home is tasty!
