Indawo

Blönduós, Austur-Hunavatnssysla, Iceland

An excellent location for day trips in the North of Iceland. In the winter time, the northern lights (aurora borealis) can often be seen. Wilderness, unique tranquility, own coastline, surrounded by lakes on East and West side, and the ocean in the North. Thingeyrar is about 224 kilometers from Reykjavik (ca. 2 hours and 45 minutes); the farm is 168 kilometers from Akureyri (ca. 2 hours drive). The nearest town is Blönduós (23 kilometers), where basic services are available.

The region has several of the best salmon fishing rivers in the world.

Thingeyrar was, in past times, one of the most famous estates in the Húnaþing region and also the site of a church. Thingeyrar commands one of the widest and most beautiful panoramic views in the county. It is said that no estate was as big as or endowed with such elegant buildings as Thingeyrar, which is probably not surprising as it was home to chieftains and the elite for many centuries. Thingeyrakirkja church was built of stone and consecrated in 1877. The construction material of the was fetched to the Nesbjorg Cliffs on the western side of Lake Hop and transported on sledges across it during winter. Thingeyrar was also the site of the Iceland's first monastery, founded in 1133. Churches have stood there from the foundation of the monastery to this date.

After the foundation of the monastery, Thingeyrar became one of the most important centers of culture and education in Iceland. Many manuscripts of the old Sagas, which are still preserved, were written there. The bubonic plague (the black death) almost devastated the monastery and the farm around the turn of the 14th century.

Other places of interest: Hvitserkur (a 15 m high basalt rock formation near the eastern shore of the peninsula Vatnsnes, Borgarvirki (volcanic plug mentioned for its use as a fortress in the sagas), Blönduós (town), Skagaströnd (town); Sauðárkrókur (town).

A variety of wild arctic animals, birds and seals.
