Indawo
Roy designed and built the cottage to have a log cabin feel.
All of the cedar wood on the interior walls came from trees that were harvested on this property as well as the cabinetry which Roy built. In addition to being a licensed contractor he is a wood craftsman and artist.
The 'cabin' features a full size pool table, queen size bed, queen size sofa-bed and a large screen television. The kitchen boasts a full size refrigerator, microwave, toaster and both Keurig and standard coffee makers (there is NO oven/stove). We have a small charcoal grill for your use (please bring your own charcoal). The bathroom offers a walk-in tiled shower. Surrounded by pines, cedars, maples and birch trees you feel as if you are in a tree house! There is an incredible amount of varied birds and wildlife to enjoy viewing. The spring is particularly delightful as the ‘peepers’ are in full song every night.
We have ten acres of beautiful NorthWoods Creekfront property; private yet conveniently located close to Escanaba (about 6 miles to the East) in Delta County, MI. The Island Resort and Casino is about 9 miles West.
Portage Creek borders the perimeter of the yard and runs through our property.
We have parking room for your boat or snowmobiles and trailers.
There is a small deck/porch that one can step right outside the door and sit down to enjoy your coffee privately and peek through the trees to see what critters arrive to drink out of the pond across the way.
All the wildlife here is always a huge joy to us. Over the years some of the wildlife we have seen here are deer, squirrels, coyotes, otters, bobcats and bear to name a few. Birds we have seen include chicadees, cardinals, goldfinches, indigo buntings, hawks, owls and bald eagles. In 2016 through incredible patience over several months Debby was eventually able to get a wild buck deer to consistently eat out of her hand! Spring and fall we welcome or bid farewell to the flocks of Canadian geese, sand hill cranes and hummingbirds as they migrate overhead (we are on their flight path). In addition we see monarch butterflies stopping by as they begin their migration to Mexico - the Stonington Peninsula which is about an hour drive over land (or 10 minutes over the 'ice' bridge in deep winter from Gladstone) is a well known location for them to stop at and lay their eggs. There are several dedicated people who gently catch, tag and release the monarchs not only for our education of the butterflies but also the general health of our planet. Tagged monarchs from here have been found well over 2,000 miles away, just astonishing!
Autumn explodes with mind blowing leaf colors not only here but all over the Upper Peninsula. One of our favorite things to do is sit outside in late summer/early fall and delight in the ruby throat hummingbirds as they prepare to begin their southerly migration. It's not unusual to have groups of about a dozen hummingbirds at any given time buzzing around the feeders for about a week before they depart.
The driveway used to be an old railroad grade. If you walk down the grade past the red gates you will eventually come to a cement cistern (we have also heard it was a cement weigh station but we have not been able to verify either one). These cisterns (water collection sites) were used for coal steam engines on the trains. We have enjoyed finding all sorts of old jugs, spikes, bottles, oil lamps, etc along the grade over the years.
In the yard there is a fire pit (we have plenty of wood for your use!) for campfire stories and s'mores. There are lawn games such as croquet and corn-hole for your use also.
Yes we are pet friendly (additional pet fee). We welcome you to our neck of the woods!

Ukungena kondwendwe
We have ten acres of beautiful NorthWoods Creekfront property; private yet conveniently located close to Escanaba (about 6 miles to the East) in Delta County, MI. The Island Resort and Casino is about 9 miles West.
Portage Creek runs through our property and borders the perimeter of the yard.
We fill (daily) our many bird feeders and put out corn for birds, bunnies, deer and squirrels. We have a lovely garden which our guests are welcome to stroll thru and help themselves to any of our fresh veggies. There are wild raspberries, blueberries and strawberries all around as well as the elusive and treasured morel mushrooms for a day or two in the spring.
The Schlesinger ORV trail is about two blocks to the north of us. This trail is newly cut and ideal for four wheelers and snowmobiles. We have plenty of parking room for your boat or snowmobiles and trailers (give us a heads up first please).
Stonington Peninsula is about an hour drive over land to the east (or 10 minutes over the 'ice' bridge in deep winter from Gladstone). This is a terrific spot to find fossils in the sandstone shoals and the Stonington Lighthouse is so cool. You can walk up the spiral staircase to the top of this historical lighthouse and enjoy an incredible view of the lake and shorelines. Speaking of lighthouses...you might be interested in the haunted Seul Choix (pronounced sis-chwaw) lighthouse located in Gulliver, about an hour and 10 minutes to the east. This location has been featured on several different television shows. There is a small museum and gift shop there too. The state operated and maintained historical ghost town of Fayette in Garden is about an hour to the east. A fascinating glimpse into the past, and a gorgeous location.
Mackinac Island is 117 miles east of here. Absolutely not to be missed! This historic island allows no motorized vehicles on it, transportation is by horse drawn carriages, bicycles or foot.

Ezinye izinto ekufuneka uziqaphele
We are pet friendly! We do require an additional flat fee of $25 to cover the additional cleaning and laundry expense (we send the pet fee request through Airbnb to the guest separately for this).
We have an outdoor charcoal grill for your use (you supply your own charcoal briquettes).
We highly recommend bug repellent! Some say the mosquito should be our state bird, lol. We spray for mosquitoes as often as we can, but hey, it’s the woods and water here.
If you will be parking a boat or trailer please advise us in advance so we can be certain to have the areas open for your use.

Welcome! 'We' are Roy and Debby and we would be delighted to have you discover for yourself just how peaceful and beautiful our location is. Roy is a born and raised ‘Yooper’ (what we U P residents refer to ourselves as). His family has been in the UP for several generations; his paternal grandfather was Escanaba's Fire Chief for many years. Although Debby was born and raised in Southern California she has achieved honorary Yooper status. Roy is a wood craftsman and artist while Debby hand dyes, hand weaves and hand beads decorative baskets. The cedar planks lining the walls were all harvested and planed by Roy right from the property. We both love music, bird watching, wildlife, organic gardening and learning new artistic mediums and crafts. We share our hearts and our home with our dog Rocco and our cat Cedar.
