Our sensitively converted C18th stone barn home with self-contained guest wing & 2-bed tree house, is set in our managed woodland high in the Brecons with stunning views of the Beacons that surround us. We are close to Pen y Fan (the highest Beacon), the spectacular waterfalls, caves, and walks, as well as being a popular area for cyclists, with Bike Park Wales nearby. Dogs welcome! Ideal for families, with access and all rooms all on one level. (Please read the notes below thoroughly).

Indawo
This is off-grid living with mod cons, such as 30MB/sec streaming wifi broadband and a Sky TV. From 2020 we have our lofty twin-bed tree house, additional car parking, and - for those who love walking, perhaps with their dogs – there are plenty of superb walks on the hills and in the valleys. We generate our own electricity via solar PV/battery-bank and micro-wind turbine, hot water via solar thermal, biomass and a Rayburn m, fuelled from our own sustainably-managed woodland. There is a 13m long south-facing private patio down the length of the barn with its own lawn and rockery and great view! Gas-barbecue provided. The lawn can be for camping as well as the tree house close by (for children perhaps?) both with their own toilet adjacent – camping is a small extra charge.

No strangers share the accommodation with you; it's just you – even if you only need 1 bedroom, , with us living the other side of the west-facing courtyard.

The maximum number of guests that can be accommodated in the main wing is 5, and that is if there are two in the double bed, so otherwise 4. The treehouse is an add-on for the intrepid (in winter especially!) since it is unheated and uninsulated. There is not enough room for more than 5 to sit at the dining table and so those in the tree house need to squeeze in to the kitchen snug to eat, for example.

We charge an additional £5/night heating tariff from 15th October – 15th April, which we ask you to pay to us on arrival. Camping is £5/person/night (bring your own tent and sleeping bags for this and the treehouse, but we have camp beds)

Bought as little more than a pile of stones in 2005, we (Sandy & Stephen Waldron) finally moved into these C18th barns in 2014 after years of self-building. We have our own ancient lime kiln in our woodland, along with the original stone quarry adjacent. There is a gas-fired barbecue you may use on your own private, south-facing patio. Free to use – if you clean it upon leaving; £10 charge if we have to!

The treehouse had its own two ring + hob camping-gas stove and basic implements etc. There is access to an outdoor wc and washbasin, but to shower and bath you need to enter the guest wing.

We seem to be popular with cyclists. We are close to BikePark Wales, the best mountain cycling course in Europe ((URL HIDDEN), just outside Merthyr Tydfil) about 20 minutes away by car. The country roads here are ideal for cyclists with little traffic and great climbs! We also have a lockable shipping container for bikes, although everything here is very safe. We have never had anyone trespassing on our land or any attempted break in, although we are very secure anyway. Local farmers keep a close look-out for anything unusual in a village like ours!

Another major reason people stay with us is our proximity to Pen Y Fan.

The kitchen/snug is quite compact, which is why in 2020 we extended and there is now a solarium type of dining/lounge area opening out onto the patio and lawn.

The kitchen now has a small free-standing worktop convection oven. It also has two gas hobs and a microwave. There is a fridge and also a coffee-maker. We allow you to use our washing machine for a small fee; £2.50/wash.

The system produces hot baths and showers but the thermal store easily drains if larger parties have long or multiple showers or bath. The water is not heated instantaneously.

Ukungena kondwendwe
Essentially you have a wing within our home, with your own key and front door . We live across the courtyard and you have a locked door between us and you. Your space is all yours.

There are three steps up into your space and two down, so wheelchair access is not perfect.

The tree house has two single beds, lighting, power, two desks and a platform with a cooking area, off which there is a rope bridge across to a platform from which in 2021 we plan to install a zip wire run! It hangs high over the valley although the access side is just a shirt stepped ladder up.

Ezinye izinto ekufuneka uziqaphele
If you want your privacy that is fine. Just tap on the door to our bit if you need us or have questions!

We do NOT provide breakfast or other meals. This is a self-catering AirBNB. We try to ensure that there is milk, sugar, and basic tea/coffee etc for you on arrival. We grow vegetates in our polytunnel, so do ask us what is available. From winter 2020 we plan to have hens and so will be able to provide eggs; all for a mislay but reasonable charge.

We also provide a modern travel-cot and a high chair. Children 2 years old and under are not charged.

We welcome up to 2 dogs, but ask that they don't sleep on the beds.

Pen Y Fan and the other Beacons, the waterfalls and caves, and other magnificent walks can be accessed, as well as our several acres of woodland, with breathtaking views of most of the Beacons.

From 15th October to 15th April we charge a small heating supplement of £5/night.

Camping space is offered to our guests giving more fun and sleeping space. There is a separate charge for this if required.

Ystradfellte, Wales, United Kingdom

Sheep farming countryside, set deep in the Brecons in the village of Ystradfellte. The village is well known for its range of waterfalls and cave networks and is at the heart of what is called 'Waterfall Country'. There are standing stones and ancient settlements. And of course great walks which we can tell you about. We provide a handbook we have put together telling you about the barn and local information and Ordnance Surveys maps of the area. Many cyclists stay here since it is well-known for its challenging, breathtaking (literally) routes and we are not far from the superb BikePark Wales in Merthyr.

Practising architect and husband, wife Sandy, with three adult children, and (currently) 6 grandsons with another on the way. I am a self-builder and advocate for alternative energy living. I am also the village church organist, love walking & gardening. We have a very active border collie-Labrador cross dog, and hope soon to keep chicken and pigs.

Ngexesha lokuhlala kwakho
Stephen is a practicing architect (FRIBA) with his office in nearby Hirwaun. Sandy is a copy-editor, transcriber, and ghost-writer – working from home. Our vision, after 30 years of London inner-city life, was for this to be a place for people to de-stress in the calm serenity and natural beauty here, but we welcome interaction with us – we love meeting people and making new friends from all around the world!
Sime guests like to come into our dining room with its heat view across th valley for a drink and nibbles with us and we can tell you about the best walks and local interests. But there is a detailed handbook all about pubs, restaurants, castles etc.

.Your wing has its own bathroom, so you can have total privacy. There is our own managed woodland with breathtaking views and a limekiln and quarry, 8 acres to explore, and a large poly tunnel where we grow fruit and veg for ourselves and our guests. We can order local free range eggs and from Autumn 2939 we should have our own chicken and eggs.

Currently Stephen is building a very long dry stone wall so if you want exercise ......! We also harvest and chop/split wood endlessly and have a log-splitter ‘boys toy’ for those who fancy it!
