Spacious home on Cape Rosier’s Orr Cove, with spectacular views to the west of Penobscot Bay and Maine’s unique rugged coast. An ideal location for seaside activities, where families can enjoy picnics and bonfires on the beach, kids can search for starfish and sand dollars, and adventurers can set off in kayaks to explore the coast and nearby islands.

Indawo
The house is owned by four brothers and their families. It was built in the 1960’s by our parents who had fallen in love with the Maine coast and discovered Orr Cove on Cape Rosier to be the perfect location. The property has extensive ocean frontage as well as 110 acres of woodland.
Our parents built a semi-traditional Cape Cod, which blends with other houses in the area, and yet is modern and spacious within. Later they added a barn using wood harvested from our forest. This includes a garage, a greenhouse and an apartment on the second floor. Our property is now under a land conservation easement with the Blue Hill Heritage Trust, protecting it from future development.
The house itself features a living room with a large stone fireplace, cathedral ceilings, and two-story picture windows overlooking the pond to the south. Also on the first floor is a dining room with wood stove, a sitting area facing Orr Cove, and a well-equipped kitchen. The master bedroom is on the first floor. On the second floor there are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds. Downstairs, on the basement level but above ground, there is a large sunny room overlooking the pond. The pond room couch converts into a wide, comfortable bed, providing guests with a spacious fourth bedroom. There is one full and one half bathroom on the first floor, a ¾ bathroom on the second floor and laundry facilities in the basement.
Guests may also use the barn apartment. This has two twin beds and a set of bunkbeds, a basic kitchen with dining area, and a ¾ bathroom.
The house can comfortably sleep 8 people and the barn apartment 4 more.
The house has WiFi (modest bandwidth) and a library of vintage DVD and VHS tapes that can be played on the TV (also modest size) in the living room. Due to the remoteness of this location we do not have cable or other means for receiving live TV broadcasts. There are collections of toys for children as well as games, puzzles and books for guests of all ages.
The house overlooks the bay and is situated 200 feet from the shore. While Harborside Road passes between the house and the shore, traffic is very light and does not disrupt the sense of solitude or easy access to the cove. Guests can sit in the front yard or on the beach and watch schooners and lobster boats in the bay, or can gather on the back deck for a barbecue.
Orr Cove is a unique place. It remains largely pristine, with rock ledges on the north and south sides, topped by spruce trees with branches draped in moss. At high tide the beach consists of areas of cobblestones with scattered boulders and areas of sand. But as the tide goes out, a large, gently sloping and mostly sand beach is exposed which extends well out from the shore. Children can safely wade and search for ocean treasures, such as crabs, mussels, starfish and sand dollars. The beach can be used for swimming as well, though the water is cold. It’s best to swim on a sunny day as the tide comes in over the warm sand.
Families can set up our fire pit or build a bonfire on the beach for a picnic. Adventurers can set off in kayaks to explore the coast and visit islands. Everyone can marvel at the magnificent sunsets over the bay and the Camden Hills beyond, while watching eagles and osprey circle above.
The pond, just south of the house, has a platform with ladder. Our family enjoys using this for swimming and small boats. (It is warmer than the ocean, though a bit muddy on the bottom).
There is an extensive network of marked trails in the 110 acres of woods behind the house. Maps are provided with other guest information.

Ukungena kondwendwe
Guests have access to the house, the barn (with garage and apartment), the pond, the woods and of course the Orr Cove beach.
Guests can use the propane barbecue on the back deck or take the metal fire pit to the beach. These are stored in the garage.
There are lawn chairs and yard games stored in the garage, as well as a collection of life jackets that may be used by guests.
Kayaks can be rented from the Activity Shop in Blue Hill.
Tools in the basement and barn workshops are only for use by the owners.

Brooksville, Maine, United States

There are many unique points of interest to visitors in our neighborhood, on Cape Rosier itself, around the Blue Hill Peninsula, and somewhat further “down east” along the Maine coast.
We share Orr Cove with the Nearing’s Good Life Center, our neighbor to the south. Just over half a mile further south is the Four Seasons Farm, a pioneer in organic farming. The quaint village of Harborside, noted for its Fourth of July parade and celebration, is a mile and a half to our north. A further half mile to the north is the Holbrook Island Sanctuary State Park. Holbrook Island itself is a short paddle off shore, and the park includes extensive woodlands on the mainland as well. The park has well-maintained trails, picnic areas on the beach and docks for launching small boats.
The nearest convenience store and bakery is the charming Bucks Harbor Market, just off Cape Rosier, a 15-minute drive away. Three nearby towns are very much worth a visit: Blue Hill, on the east side of Blue Hill Peninsula, a 35-minute drive, Castine, quite close to the north, but requiring a drive of about 45 minutes around the Bagaduce River inlet, and Stonington, to the south on Deer Isle, about 50 minutes away. Blue Hill has excellent classical music performances through the summer at Kneisel Hall and there’s the must-see Blue Hill Fair during the first week of September. Castine has the Maine Maritime Academy as well as museums relating to early American history. Stonington is admired for its active harbor used by fishing and lobster boats. It also has an opera house!
The nearest town with many stores, even malls, is Ellsworth, about a 55-minute drive.
The main attraction for many visitors to down east Maine is Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island. This is about an hour and a half drive from Cape Rosier. (Best to leave early to avoid heavy traffic to the park later in the morning.) Closer to Cape Rosier, much less visited but very rewarding, is Isle au Haut. This lovely island, much of which is actually part of Acadia National Park, can be reached by mail boat from Stonington. The island features many strikingly picturesque bays and rocky headlands, which can be explored in a day’s hike along well-maintained trails.
