Sarpakavu (Grove of Snakes) - Sarpakavus - groves specially meant for snakes - had been, for ages, an integral part of most traditional dwellings of Kerala. Hinduism reveres snakes and so it was customary to set apart some land, not too far from the house, exclusively for snakes. It was forbidden to kill the snakes or to destroy the flora of the groves. This meant that the land would gradually become a mini jungle. Medicinal plants were commonly seen. The gigantic trees and thickly grown shrubs and vines that harbored a variety of poisonous and harmless snakes used to give the groves a foreboding appearance. Inside the grove, a snake shrine would be built for the serpent god who, it was believed, would bring prosperity to the family. Apart from the occasional prayers and ritualistic feeding of milk to the snakes to please the serpent gods, human interventions in these ecosystems were practically nil. Thus, the religious beliefs indirectly promoted the conservation of natural resources.

Kumarakom, Kerala, India

With the mighty Vembanad Lake in the backdrop, people visit Kumarakom to immerse themselves in the backwaters of Kerala. You are greeted by lush mangrove forests, paddy fields and massive coconut trees lining up on the shores with the wind dictating their course. National Geographic listed it among the select destinations in the world that one must visit at least once in their lifetime.
Its legendary bird sanctuary spread over 14 acres, is a famous haunt of ornithologists and bird watchers. Many migratory species like the Siberian Stork and Wild Duck can be seen here along with darters, herons, egret, waterfowls and cuckoos. It is also famous for its aquatic life with Chemeen (Prawns), the Konju (Tiger Prawns) and Karimeen being extremely popular among all our visitors. Houseboat rides in traditional Kettuvellams form the apex of a visit here as one gets to soak in the entirety of the place in the majestic Alappuzha backwaters and the Vembanad Lake.
Legend has it that Parasurama, one of the 10 incarnations of Lord Vishnu reclaimed the land of Kerala by throwing his axe in to the sea. History talks of another Parasurama, Mr Alfred George Baker, who reclaimed the wonder land, Kumarakom, from 500 acres of wetlands lying north-east of Lake Vembanad. Our modern-day Parasurama created a great, fertile area from marshy land.

It was Baker’s interest in agriculture, his industry and his love of Nature and diligent care of it that enabled him to create this paradise. Kumarakom, owes much to the Bakers, who strived incessantly for the development of the land and the advancement of the people. They played a key role in bringing about many agricultural, educational and social reforms in the State. The Baker family, along with the Christian missionaries, was instrumental in bringing many progressive changes in the thinking and lifestyle of the local populace.
The house where the Baker family lived for four generations, along with 100 acres of land in Kumarakom, was sold to the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) in 1982. Later, it was leased out to the Taj Group that converted the bungalow into the first modern tourist resort in Kumarakom - the Taj Garden Retreat. Though renovated, the building still retains a rustic beauty and stands as a beautiful monument to the Baker family’s contributions to a land they created and developed.
