Indawo

County Westmeath, Ireland

THERE ARE SOME NOTABLE HISTORIC BUILDINGS WHICH ARE CLOSE BY

Glasson Infants National School now the Heritage Centre.

In 1844 Isabella Harris-Temple of Waterston Estate funded the building of a free school for the children of Glasson. The school house was a one storey building built of mortar and stone with a slated roof. The Harris-Temple family continued to pay a teacher to conduct classes until 1897

The school remained closed until 1905 when it reopened as an Infants National School catering for children up to the age of eight years. At this point the children transferred to Tubberclair National School. In order to obtain grant aid from the National Education Board a permanent trained teacher was needed. This teacher was Miss Annie Connaughton on loan from Tubberclair National School as acting principal .Grant aid would only be provided if the average attendance was a minimum of twenty five pupils. Only in very exceptional circumstances would a school remain open with less than twenty five pupils. One such exception in this area was the school on Inchmor Island even though it had an average attendance of twelve pupils.

A report in the local paper of October 7th 1905 stated that the local people and Arthur R. Harris-Temple, Grandson of Isabelle had ambitious plans for the school. It was envisaged that classes would be held whereby domestic industries i.e. lace making, knitting, basketry and woodwork would be taught to the local people. the report continued that the 'Village of Industry' will be as well known a description of this beauty spot as the 'Village of the Roses'. These ambitious plans unfortunately did not come to fruition. It is interesting to note that ninety years later the building is being used as a cultural centre for and by the community.
In 1912 it seemed as though the future of the school was in jeopardy, average attendances were low, and the commissioners of National Education queried the continuance of grant aid, in view of the low average attendance. A comprehensive report was prepared, with details of the number of children involved, their age and distance from the nearest national school. Extensive use was made of the ordnance survey maps in the report. Like the school on Inchmor island an exceptional case was made for the school and it remained open in spite of low attendances.
There were a number of changes of teachers throughout the years. The longest serving teacher being Miss Kennedy later Mrs Heneghan. The building finally closed its doors as a school in 1962 when the remaining pupils transferred to Tubberclair National School.

Portlick.

A Dillon Castle built on land granted to Henry De Lion by King John in 1185. The castle is one of many dotted around the Barony of Kilkenny West. It is, however, the only habited castle of them. The castle has had a

history of changing ownership like most of the demesnes locally.
The Dillon’s erected a tower house here and it has been added to at other times, each in the style of the period. However, the Dillon’s were Catholic and lost a lot of their lands in the 1640 rebellion, they left not only their land but their adopted country and fled to Europe where they made a name for themselves in military circles.

From this period on Portlick was in the hands of speculators. Firstly a Thomas Keighly was granted possession in 1669 and he sold it to William Palmer of Dublin, but in 1703 it was in the hands of Rev. Robert Smyth. Records show this gentleman who was vicar of Ballyloughbe (now known as Mount Temple) appears to have passed away in the same year. His son, Michael, then a minor succeeded him. The estate of 340 acres with a dwelling house and stables was let.

Portlick remained in the Smyth family name until 1934 when Harriet Smyth married Norman Wallard Simpson. She died without issue. Her husband died in 1955 and Portlick changed hands, this time a Norwegian purchaser. Portlick is now in the hands of an Australian with Dillon connections.

Killinure House

Killinure House is situated overlooking the inner lakes of Lough Ree and about two miles North-West of Glasson village. This is Dillon country and contains the remains of many tower-houses of the family, which included one at Killinure, which was used as a base by Sir James Dillon for the capture of Athlone in 1641.

The present house is five bay having a double bow-front, with an unusual single storey doric order portico. The plate glass which replaced the old glazing bars dates from about 1895 when the house was completely restored, and it now bears a remarkable Victorian appearance, though it was probably built about 1780 by the Murray family. The Maunsells were there in 1846 and 1856 and in1881 John William Maunsell was in residence. The Medge family succeeded and remained until 1922. Captain A. Smyth was there for a short time and was soon followed by Mr.Thomas Reid, whose son Thomas and his wife Breda now maintain the house and lands as one of the finest hotels and golf clubs in the country. Glasson Mews is constructed in what was the old walled garden and orchard.
