Austinmer, New South Wales, Australia

• Ideally located just an hour 15 minutes from Sydney CBD along the stunning coast road yet this exclusive setting feels like it is a million miles away.
• One of the most popular spots on the Illawarra coastline, Austinmer offers village charm, unbeatable family beaches, chic boutiques and tree-lined streets with fine architecture to lust after. A day in Austinmer would have to begin with walk along the coast track to watch the sunrise and work up an appetite. Grab a coffee and bacon and egg roll from the Austi Beach Café and head across the road to the beach and watch the waves roll in. Pack a picnic, some cold drinks, hats, sunscreen and swimmers and idle the hour’s away body surfing the waves or splashing with the kids. Cruise Moore Street and check out the bead shop, the eclectic finds of Haveli high quality homewares and let retail therapy melt away your worries. Or get ready for the evening at Moore Hair or take in a Yoga class. Grab a delicious turmeric chai latte at Mr and Mrs Smith in Coledale, Dinner or breakfast at Fireworks Café is a must with an ever evolving menu and friendly atmosphere. Pack a towel and a good book and take in the scenery as you stroll to Little Austie beach. Drive down the coast to the shops and cafes at Thirroul or up the coast to the Seacliff Bridge and Royal National Park. Connect with nature and take in the numerous walking tracks up the escarpment and explore its magical waterfalls or beach and hop down the coast and explore the many rock pools, surf breaks and charming villages.
• it is a chic suburb with specialist delis and cafes, a fashionable, almost 'inner city' ambience, and a popular beach which attracts crowds during the warm summer months.
WALKS
A favourite is the spectacular Sublime Point walking track –
The Sublime point walking track starts or ends at Austinmer or Sublime Point. It has been significantly renovated in recent years and combines many wooden steps with some aluminium ladders in the steeper rock climbing parts particularly those close to the top of the escarpment. This is perhaps Wollongong and the Illawarra's most spectacular attraction and is short enough for most people with moderate fitness.

Wodi Wodi Bush Walk
A beautiful walk starting from Stanwell Park Railway station, eventually starting the steep ascent up to Mount Mitchell with spectacular views over Stanwell Park. This walk has epic escarpment views and beautiful rainforest - not to mention the creek passings.

You will need reasonable fitness and agility to enjoy the rough terrain, you will get your hands dirty! It is a test on cardio skills and anyone with knee or joint problems will struggle and is not recommended. There are excellent photo opportunities and a generally enjoyable place to delight in Illawarra's nature!
ILLAWARRA ESCARPMENT TRAVERSE

Illawarra Escarpment Traverse. Stanwell Park - Forest Track - Austinmer. Great views of the Illawarra coast. The vegetation is varied along the walk including sections of rainforest. Iconic ladders and steps down the escarpment to finish.

Sea Cliff Bridge Lookout
Sea Cliff Bridge Lookout is easily the greatest location in the Wollongong region for a sunrise. The Iconic Sea cliff bridge connects Coalcliff and Clifton, built to replace the eroding cliff hugging road. The bridge is featured in countless car and tourism advertisements for its unique characteristics. If early mornings aren't you thing but Photography is, then this spot also makes for excellent long exposure photography of cars lights travelling along the bridge.
The Sea Cliff Bridge Trail Head
The start of the track up to view sea cliff bridge starts on the south side of the bridge. Find parking on the Clifton side of the bridge and walk towards the bridge. Heading north on the bridge on the left side of the road you will see a white sign with black writing with "Sea Cliff bridge" written in it. In front of this sign there is a small parking bay. The bushes by this parking bay is the start of the trail up to the top of sea cliff bridge. You should notice a slightly worn in track heading into the thick bushes. If still unclear as to where the trail head starts, the map below pinpoints the location.
Once you are on the track you will notice a warn in track that starts leading up hill to the lookout. Take note that the track up is very steep so make sure to wear appropriate footwear. If going for sunrise or sunset remember a head torch as your hands will be mostly tied up for the climb uphill. The track up is only a few hundred meters but will take you roughly 15-20 minutes to climb up. There are several warn in tracks on the way up but they all mostly meet back up.

SURFING
Little Austi is an exposed beach and reef break that has quite consistent surf. Offshore winds are from the northwest. Ideal swell is from the east northeast. Directly below the apartment there is a wedging left hand break and there is a right hand reef break as well.

Main Austinmer Family Beach
Local families love Austinmer Beach, particularly the fenced in playground (sadly no shade cloth) that has plenty of activities for kids of a variety of ages. The rock pools are a major draw for this beach, too.
Located at the south end of the beach, they attract children and adults alike with their amazing ocean life. We spotted fish, a crab, sea snails, an anemone, and some freaky looking creatures that none of us could identify. Also at the south end of the beach are two large ocean pools.

HANG GLIDING AT BALD HILL, STANWELL PARK

Have you ever wanted to feel the sensation of flying? Tandem hang gliding is the perfect way to experience exactly this – and there’s no better place in New South Wales to take to the skies than Bald Hill in Stanwell Park in Wollongong.
This is the home base for the Sydney Hang Gliding Centre, and whether you have plenty of experience or are keen to try hang gliding for the first time, the friendly team here is happy to help.
Bald Hill has long been known as a famous lookout and played an important role in Australia’s aviation history. In the early years of the 20th century, flight pioneer Lawrence Hargrave used the beach below Bald Hill to experiment with box kites – and today, visitors can view a memorial cairn dedicated to him at the hill’s peak.

BIKE TRAILS
A scenic ride - this bike ride is fabulous and a wonderful way to see the coast and all the lovely beaches, lagoons and inlets. It is mostly flat so easy to ride , but at every corner there is another stunning view of ocean and escarpment. It caters for all level of cyclist from family fun to the more serious men in Lycra or ladies. Please be aware this is a shared route with walkers, runner, mums and bubba. So slow down when passing ring your bell and enjoy the salty sea air, coastal views.

SYMBIO WILDLIFE PARK
Symbio Wildlife Park is a family owned and operated zoo which is located on the Southern outskirts of Sydney in the suburb of Helensburgh. Conveniently positioned on the top of the Illawarra escarpment, we are just minutes away from Stanwell Park Beach, the world renowned Royal National Park, Sea Cliff Bridge and also Bald Hill Lookout where you can take in majestic 180 degree views of the pacific ocean.
Nestled on 16 picturesque acres of manicured gardens, Symbio is home to all your Australian animal favourites as well as a large range of amazing exotic animals, which include Sumatran tigers, cheetahs, ring-tailed lemurs, red pandas, meerkats, small monkeys and more.
WOMBARRA SCULPTURE GARDEN
This unique and beautiful place is a must to visit and experience art and nature together. Located in the Illawarra rainforest, and 5 minutes from Austinmer, the garden is bathed in dappled light created by giant trees providing a canopy over site specific sculptures nestling among the lush native vegetation. Paths meander throughout with steps, bridges and seating for quiet moments. There are approximately 60 sculptures, varying from large installations to small and whimsical works, designed for specific areas of the garden. Styles range from abstract to figurative in a variety of materials including stone, bronze, ceramic, steel and concrete. Many of the sculptures are by Gaby Porter. Give Gaby a call and come see this wonderful garden. She’s always up for a good chat!
