Beverley, United Kingdom

Catwick is one of those unique villages that was mentioned in the Domesday Book and has stayed relatively the same size for the last 600 year or so, undeveloped with mass housing, with a resident population of around 200 people! The Doubly Thankful Village of Catwick enjoys a unique status shared with just 12 other villages throughout the whole of the UK in that it has no War Memorial. Why? Because all the men who went to War in both the First & Second World Wars came back. 30 in the First World War and 30 in the Second World War. This is celebrated with the Catwick Plaque, as unique piece of social history, a photograph of which is displayed in the Cottage. Each man who went to war gave a coin to the resident Blacksmith at the Forge, who nailed it to the Plaque next to the "Lucky" horseshoe. Every man returned alive to continue their lives in the rural community. The Plaque remains as a record of this unique status!
