Indawo

Waterford, County Waterford, Ireland

Our Cottage is only 8 minutes drive from Waterford Quay.

Our neighbourhood is located in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city founded by the Viking Traders in 914.

Waterford (Port Láirge) is Ireland's oldest city – it celebrated its 1100th anniversary in 2014 – with a history that dates back to Viking times. Taking its name from the Old Norse vedrarfjord ('winter haven' or 'windy harbour' are just two of several possible translations), it remains a busy port city on a tidal reach of the River Suir, and is famous as the home of Waterford crystal.

Things to do and see:

History

House of Waterford Crystal
This large modern complex combines a retail shop and cafe with a factory offering a tour that shows how world-famous Waterford crystal is produced. The highlight is the blowing room where you can watch skilled artisans transform blobs of red-hot molten glass into delicate crystalware. The tour ends, inevitably, in the shop, where you can wonder at the twinkling displays that range from a €30 bottle coaster to a €30,000 crystal version of Cinderella's carriage. The first Waterford glass factory was established at the western end of the riverside quays in 1783. Centuries later, after the boom of the 1980s and 1990s, the company fell on hard times and in 2009 was purchased by an American investment firm. Today around 60,000 pieces are made annually in Ireland, around 55% of the total output; the remainder is manufactured in Europe to strict Waterford standards.

Reginald's Tower
The oldest complete building in Ireland and the first to use mortar, 13th-century Reginald's Tower, the city's key fortification, is an outstanding example of medieval architecture. Its 3m- to 4m-thick walls were built on the site of a Viking wooden tower. Over the years the building served as an arsenal, a prison and a mint; it now houses a museum recording the city's Viking and early medieval history. The sparse exhibits include the tiny but exquisite Waterford Kite Brooch, made around 1100.

Bishop's Palace
The Bishop's Palace, a Georgian mansion dating from 1741, covers Waterford's history from 1700 to 1970 and displays a wide-ranging selection of treasures from the city's coffers, from period furniture, oil paintings and Georgian silverware to old photos recording the 1960s heyday of Irish showbands. Most interesting is the original dining room set with period tableware including the world's oldest surviving piece of Waterford crystal, a decanter dating from 1789.

Waterford Medieval Treasures, Waterford City.
Waterford Treasures – Three Museums in the Viking Triangle situated in the heart of Ireland’s oldest city. Three museums within a few paces of each other tell the 1100 year old story of Waterford from its foundation in 914 by Viking sea pirates. The massive stone fortress Reginald’s Tower houses Waterford's Viking Treasures. Ireland’s only Medieval Museum showcases spectacular Treasures from the Middle Ages. The elegant 1743 Bishop’s Palace is the home of the Treasures of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Christ Church Cathedral
Christ Church Cathedral is Ireland's only neoclassical Georgian cathedral. Designed by local architect John Roberts, it was built on the site of an 11th-century Viking church, where the historic 12th-century marriage of Strongbow and Aiofe took place. The rather grim highlight is the 15th-century tomb of James Rice, seven times Lord Mayor of Waterford: sculpted worms and frogs crawl over the effigy of his decaying corpse.

Holy Trinity Cathedral
The sumptuous interior of the city's Roman Catholic cathedral boasts a carved-oak baroque pulpit, painted pillars with Corinthian capitals and 10 Waterford crystal chandeliers. It was built between 1792 and 1796 by John Roberts, who also designed Christ Church Cathedral, making Waterford the only city where both the Catholic and Protestant cathedrals were designed by the same architect.

Local bars and restaurants

Jack Meades Bar and Restaurant - Ireland's only flyover pub is an extensive complex with various facets. The old world bar dates back to circa 1705, the lime kilns and ice house were built circa 1860, the grounds have been tastefully developed and are home to ducks, ponies, donkeys and goats. The large new bar was built in 2005 and boasts an extensive beer garden with childrens play area, walks with animals and ducks.

Dunbrody Famine Ship,New Ross
Called 'coffin ships' due to their fatality rate, the leaky, smelly boats that hauled a generation of Irish emigrants to America are reimagined on board this replica ship on the New Ross waterfront. A 10-minute introductory film provides historical background about the mid-19th-century Ireland they were leaving.
