Ezinye izinto ekufuneka uziqaphele
Did you come to Fiji to experience the wonders of our azure ocean? As our head divemaster Pola Pagalu says, “What we see underwater is far better than what we see up here, you just have to explore.” We have an endless amount of water-based activities for you to get up close and personal with the deep blue, from snorkeling on our house reef in search of ornate ghost pipefish, seahorses, and our resident white frog fish (aptly named ‘Froggy’), kayaking amongst our thriving mangroves, to a dolphin safari, and cruising into the sunset at golden hour, sparkling wine in hand. Kayaks, paddleboards, and snorkeling gear are complimentary and for hire from our dive shop, Ra Divers.

Prefer to keep your feet on dry land? Volivoli has plenty of land-based activities for everyone that will immerse you into the heart and soul of Fijian culture. Your tour guide Soni, is a kaumatua (village elder), originally from Rakiraki, who knows the area and its local people intimately. He’s also our former dining room manager—who worked for the Darling family for 15 years. He strives to preserve the Fijian culture by sharing the colourful history and traditions with our guests. Soni has carefully curated tours that explore the area’s dramatic landscapes, lush tropical forests, spectacular waterfalls, bustling markets, remote villages, and rich history. We also offer culinary adventures from the resort featuring the unique array of local foods, produce and culture we have here in Rakiraki.

Rakiraki, Fiji

On the most northerly tip of Fiji’s largest island, Viti Levu, lies a headland where, nestled amongst lush rainforest, thundering waterfalls, history-filled caves, sugarcane fields, abundant agriculture, thriving mangroves, and some of the earth’s healthiest coral reefs, you’ll find Volivoli Beach Resort—the premium, boutique, four-star, vacation destination on Fiji’s untouched Suncoast.

From Nadi International Airport turn left towards the part of the island that gets the most hours of sunshine per year, the Suncoast. After a two-and-a-half hour picturesque drive, passing azure coastline, dense green jungle, rural, colourful Fijian villages, and fresh fruit stands along the way—stopping to allow the odd cow, wild horse, barefoot farmer or school children to cross the road—you’ll arrive at our remote island paradise, Volivoli.

Bask in the sunshine around our oceanfront swimming pool surrounded by flourishing gardens, lounge in a hammock by the beach watching the sun rise and set, dine on inspired local cuisine in our two restaurants, enjoy a cocktail at one of our three bars, regenerate in our restorative spa, or explore a colourful underwater world on a diving adventure with Ra Divers, our world-class dive shop (with arguably the most modern set up in the South Pacific) on our daily trips to Bligh Water, where there’s some of the healthiest, thriving soft coral diving in the world. Later, head out on a deep-sea fishing excursion, try your hand at kitesurfing, dabble in our full suite of non-motorized water sports, or venture off to explore the enchanting surrounds of the Ra province.

Secluded and remote enough to forget bustle of city life, but close enough (just 10 minutes) to Rakiraki town should you want to do some shopping and exploring, Volivoli has everything you need while still remaining rural and luxuriously untouched. Spread out over many acres on its own peninsula, our 32 ocean view rooms are comprised of four brand-new, two-bedroom luxury family villas, 11 newly-renovated premium ocean view bures, nine deluxe ocean view rooms, and eight standard ocean view rooms. Each room is found along garden paths that wind through brightly-coloured hibiscus, fragrant frangipani and flowering bird of paradise. The only sound you’ll hear in the morning at Volivoli are the birds singing, the ocean lapping the shore, and the quiet hum of the dive boat coming into the house reef to take out our divers—so relax and take in the quiet that is Volivoli.

Being a family-run business means we’re approachable, and on-site at all times if our guests need anything—from a romantic dinner for two by the sea, or a special dietary concern. At Volivoli we’ve mastered the art of slow living, and we can’t wait to revel in it with you.

What started as a backpackers lodge to accommodate off-the-beaten path adventurers in search of the best diving in Fiji back in the 90s, has evolved into the award-winning, four-star boutique resort Volivoli is today, still owned and operated with the heart and soul of the original owners—the Darling family.

The Darling family moved to Fiji in 1993, when Steve Darling Senior took a contract to finish the last 35km of Fiji’s main highway, The Kings Road, from Rakiraki to Suva. He moved his family—his wife Gail and two sons Steve and Nick—with him from Murchison, New Zealand to Rakiraki, Fiji and immersed them in island life. The boys went to a local school, and learned to dive at a small dive shop, Ra Divers, on nearby island Nanu-I-Ra.

When the contract finished, Steve and Gail retired on Nanu-I-Ra, and the boys headed off to boarding school in New Zealand. Things came full circle for Steve Junior, who after high school enrolled in a dive instructor course in New Zealand and soon returned to Fiji to work as a guide on the Coral Coast. It wasn’t long before he made his way back to Rakiraki to work for Ra Divers, where it all began for Volivoli.

Shortly after Steve started working at Ra Divers, the owner of the dive shop and his family were unable to be in Fiji full-time to run the business due to illness, and when the opportunity presented itself—just over a decade after initially moving to Fiji—Steve and his mother made the spontaneous decision to buy Ra Divers while Steve Senior was back and forth between New Zealand renovating a small pub.

It didn’t take long for the shop to gain momentum, and with more divers, the need for affordable accomodation was inevitable. One morning while Steve Senior and Steve Junior were fishing they spotted a large, beautiful sand bar and beachfront piece of land. They knew then it was special, tracked down the owner, which turned out the belong to their housekeeper’s family. They put in an offer and that fortuitous decision led to the creation of Volivoli Beach Resort.

After traveling for a few years, the youngest son, Nick, made it back to Rakiraki with his girlfriend after a call from Steve Senior asking him to come help run the resort, which at the time was just 65 dorm-style bedrooms. He caught him at the perfect time—on a cold, rainy Sunday morning while he was living in London. Within a week he was on a plane back to Fiji and quite naturally fell into the marketing side of the business. Now, both sons, Steve and Nick have raised their families in their private homes on the property, and are immersed in Fijian life. Following in their father’s footsteps, all the children attend local Fijian school, and are learning to snorkel and dive with Ra Divers.

As time went by and the resort kept growing. Then cyclone Winston hit—a massive tragedy that allowed for positive change at Volivoli. The resort suffered significant damage, but created an opportunity for a completely fresh start. The family decided together to rebuild, and at the same time to go in a brand new direction concentrating on a new market—a boutique, four-star resort, focused on providing the best value accommodation on the Suncoast. In March of this year we were awarded the quality accommodation award for Fiji, making us very proud of the the relaxed, luxury resort that Volivoli is today.
