'Number 10' is a rustic, little-bit-retro, stand-alone, private space for two. It adjoins the main house and enjoys ocean and garden views. A short flight of stairs leads to a sunny bedroom and area with fridge and microwave (but not a full kitchen!), and bathroom. There's also a deck for brekky or Happy Hour. Breakfast is included.

The Blowhole is 200 metres away for evening penguin viewing, and sunrise/sunset photos. The beach, walking tracks, great restaurants and facilities close by too.

Indawo
'Number 10' is a modest studio and a rustic space - it has its idiocyncrasies and is not like a modern hotel room. The main cottage was built in the 1950s and 'Number 10' adjoins the cottage and is UPSTAIRS of the old garage (now a storage area). Despite its simplicity, it is conveniently located and in close proximity to the township and offers a great location for penguin viewing at the Blowhole - just a few minutes walk to the end of Douglas Street.

The Gulch (harbour) is very close where you can meander along part of the coast walk and then perhaps hop aboard the Glass Bottom Boat, or enjoy fish and chips overlooking Governor's island at either of the two popular fish and chip shops - the Lobster Shack, or at Coastal Seafoods at the Wharf.

No. 10 is also very close to beautiful local beaches. And there are views over the ocean where you might spot a Southern Right, a Humpback, or an Orca during different times of the year.

For a quiet bush walk there is a leafy bush track behind 'Number 10' which leads up to the Big Rock and down onto the main road. It is great for bird watching and good for orchid spotting in October/November.

Ukungena kondwendwe
The studio is private and stand alone and there is a front garden and back yard which you are welcome to wander around and explore. There are seasonal herbs and veggies which you can help yourself to, but this season, much of the garden is welcoming spring and necessary preparations for summer are underway.

My property is ON THE CORNER of Douglas Street and a No Through Road which leads up to a walking track. It doesn't have a sealed driveway but you can park your car on the grass, either in front of 'Number 10' and the white gate near the letterbox or, if you prefer, around the left corner on the grass near the power pole in front of a brown painted gate.

Please note, my dog Mac may enthusiastically welcome you when you arrive, and probably wagging his tail and barking. He is very friendly, loves sticks and balls and appreciates a game of fetch, but is SUPER FAST and he will try and grab that stick or ball first, so please... be extra careful!! He loves meeting new friends and may pester you to play but may also try and jump on you for a pat, so please be aware if you happen to be wearing your best clothes!

We look forward to welcoming you!

Ezinye izinto ekufuneka uziqaphele
While Bicheno is known for its penguin population, numbers are erratic and we have experienced losses in recent times. It is a privilege to be able to view the penguins in their native habitat but please respect instructions and local signage regarding foreshore penguin viewing. There are instructions in the compendium in the room and torches with red cellophane which you should use if you decide to go looking for penguins. Alternatively book into an informative tour at the Penguin Tour office opposite the IGA supermarket.

Bicheno, Tasmania, Australia

Bicheno is a great place to stay as a base for your east coast adventures. It is only 40 minutes away from Freycinet National Park and less to the Douglas Apsley park. Picturesque with beautiful walks and beaches and national parks nearby, Bicheno is also a vibrant village with a choice of cafes, Chinese restaurants and specialist seafood eateries. There is a large IGA for your essentials and also a growing Sunday market.

We have penguins and abundant wildlife and, as well as the usual water activities such as swimmimg and surfing, you can enjoy a visit to East Coast Natureworld, the Glass Bottom Boat, Devils in the Dark and the Motorcycle Museum.

There is also the Bicheno Farm Shed for wine tasting and, only a short drive away, award winning wineries which offer tastings and a variety of food choices. Special music events happen on a regular basis and the Bicheno Food and Wine Festival in November is a must.
