The Old Duck House is a very cosy, luxury, self-catering holiday cottage on the edge of Northumberland National Park, near Alnwick, Cragside, Hadrian's Wall and Rothbury, as well as Bamburgh, Craster and Seahouses on Northumberland's Heritage Coast.

The Old Duck House is a detached cottage close to the burn, making it ideal for spotting aquatic wildlife.

Indawo
Entry is directly into a compact combined kitchen and living area with original exposed beams and two small windows directly overlooking the Wreigh Burn. The kitchen area has oak block work surfaces, tiled walls and an integrated oven, hob, microwave and refrigerator.

Immediately alongside the kitchen area is the living area, which comprises two wing-back armchairs, a terracotta tiled floor with underfloor heating and a delightful little wood-burning stove. There is a wall-mounted flat-screen television with Freeview and cupboards over, as well as small folding tables for dining.

Through a door immediately to the left of the kitchen area is a comfortably equipped shower room with wc and basin.

Another farmhouse oak door off the living area provides access to a very small bedroom with a double bed, overhead storage cupboards, wall-mounted television and DAB radio.

Immediately outside is a fully enclosed patio area suitable for pets, with table and chairs from which to enjoy the evening sun.

Please note the accommodation in The Old Duck House is small and is only suitable for two adults (there is no room for a cot or high chair). However, if space is not your priority and you enjoy watching the wildlife on the burn close up, this is the cottage for you. One advantage is that in winter The Old Duck House takes seconds to warm up when you return from a long walk!

Free Wi-Fi is available in this cottage

On-Site Tennis court
For use solely by our guests, there are two acres of lawned grounds surrounding the cottages at Burnfoot and a championship tennis court, newly constructed in 2009.

There are secure storage racks for bicycles As well as feeding the ponies, young imaginations can be fired by the otters, deer, badgers, salmon, owls, kingfishers and many other rare birds that can be seen regularly from the cottages.

Burnfoot is named due to it being where two streams (burns) meet and it is the perfect place for exploration and adventure, but not at the expense of parents' peace of mind. We have three young children ourselves and appreciate their need to challenge themselves in as safe an environment as we can possibly make it. Neither of the streams can be accessed without scaling a wall or a gate, and the children's play area is located well away from cars entering the farm.

Apho uza kuba khona

Netherton, England, United Kingdom

Netherton village is just a short walk from the cottages (approximately ¼ mile). The village boasts The Star Inn, an unspoilt gem of a pub. Privately owned and unchanged in 80 years, it is one of only ten in England and Wales to have appeared in every single one of CAMRA's Good Beer Guide since it was first published in 1974 - it is certainly an experience!

Rothbury, only a ten-minute drive away, benefits from a supermarket, bakeries, restaurants, and tearooms, as well as a wealth of antique and craft shops and art galleries. The award-winning delicatessen and independent grocer, Tully's of Rothbury, can deliver food and beverages, including organic ready-to-eat meals, direct to all the holiday cottages at Burnfoot. Rothbury also has comprehensive healthcare facilities in case of emergency. The nearest petrol stations are in Powburn and Alnwick.

Burnfoot was a working farm until very recently, the steading being used for grain drying and storage as well as housing livestock. However, the buildings were not large enough to cope with modern farming methods and so in 2005 all farming activity ceased. Many of the surrounding fields were planted with trees and permission was granted to convert the steading for residential use. Today, with Netherton's close proximity to Northumberland National Park, tourism is becoming the prominent industry with visitor numbers increasing every year.

More information about the history of the holiday cottages can be found on an information board at the mill pond, and we strongly recommend all of our guests to spend a day at Cragside House, not just to get lost in the rhododendron labyrinth and adventure playground, but to see the original hydro-electricity plants in action. There's even a working model of the turbine used at Burnfoot!

There are several lovely walks that can be taken direct from Burnfoot - following the burn down towards the River Coquet; following the road past the fish pass to Netherton village and beyond into the National Park; or following the burn upstream into the Cheviot Hills.

You could quite easily fill your holiday with a different walk from your front door each day.

For the more adventurous there are many bracing hill walks which take you into the heart of the Cheviot, and to the summit of The Cheviot itself. Many of these walks are described well at www.cheviotwalks.co.uk.

The National Park visitor centre in also Rothbury has a wealth of information including leaflets for dozens of breathtaking walks in the vicinity. The website also holds much useful information: www.northumberlandnationalpark.org.uk.

In the welcome pack in your cottage will be a shortlist of some of our favourites as there are simply too many to list on the website.
