Charming Arts and Crafts gate lodge house in the picturesque Northumberland countryside. Recently refurbished to a high standard, our lodge offers a relaxing traditional country escape with a modern twist.

This is a perfect location, best suited for a couple or a small family unit wanting to unwind and relax or explore Northumberland, the North Pennines AONB and Hadrian’s Wall where you can walk the wall, explore the remains of the Roman forts and visit the iconic Sycamore Tree Gap

At the Lodge you can sit back and enjoy the peaceful surroundings either by the cosy wood-burning stove or outside on the lawned garden terrace. There’s plenty here to help you unwind, use as a base, and take in the best Northumberland/Co. Durham countryside has to offer.

The Lodge was refurbished once we had refurbished and moved into the main house - a few years ago. Thought to be originally the gardener’s cottage in the early 19th Century, the Lodge and Low Bridges was built in the Arts and Crafts-style by Dr Ethel Williams, Newcastle’s first female doctor, notable suffragette, and one of the first women in the North of England to drive a motorcar. Dr Williams also created a extensive woodland garden nestled in surrounding woodland above the three denes that run through the garden. The garden had lain forgotten and hidden for decades, but we are slowly rediscovering it, whilst we work our way through tangled triffid like brambles and fallen trees, discovering original paths, steps, ponds and her plants that have survived.

The Lodge is detached from the main property and has its own front door. As you can see from the photos, it is a gate Lodge, so it is small and cosy and is best suited for a couple. The location is extremely rural and the country lane isn’t a major thoroughfare so road traffic noise shouldn’t be an issue, but never the less it is a road and not a track.

All on one level, the living area is centred around a wood burning stove, featuring a comfy sofa, arm chair and dining area. All rooms are bright and airy and feature clean, modern fittings with traditional touches and original art works. If the views don’t keep you entertained, there are board games, a 24” TV with freeview channels, DVD player and extensive DVD library available on request, and of course wifi is also available (although sometimes it gets a bit ‘rural’).

The master bedroom overlooking the rolling fields features a king-size sleigh bed, bedside tables, and a cupboard for storing clothes for a short stay. The second bedroom has twin beds and looks onto the lawned garden area for the Lodge and on towards a forest. The Lodge offers a well equipped galley kitchen, including fridge-freezer, kettle, Nespresso coffee machine, electric ‘Everhot’ range ( a bit like an AGA), dishwasher and microwave. One step down and past the kitchen is the bathroom which features a walk-in shower with natural stone underfloor heating.

There is a small terrace garden area for guests at the side of the Lodge, where you can sit back and watch the wildlife in the woods and listen to the babbling sound of the stream below. There is abundance of wildlife, from treecreepers and woodpeckers during the day to deer and owls in the twilight hours. Off street parking for one car is available at the property.

We provide you with initial logs for the wood burning boiler stove but more can be purchased if needed. There is a backup electric heating system if you don’t want to use the wood burner. We operate a no smoking policy and please note that due to the unfenced fast-moving stream at the bottom of the forested dene adjacent to the Lodge we sadly do not accept bookings with children under 10 years old except babes-in-arms.

There are plenty of places to explore but to get to the nearest shops (Stocksfield) you'll need a car. Stocksfield has a petrol station (and SPAR store), a Boots and a railway station which links Carlisle to Newcastle. The Lodge is an ideal base to explore Hadrian’s Wall, the surrounding Northumbrian countryside and stunning coast. Enjoy food and drink at the village pubs and restaurants in the picturesque village of Corbridge and the Abbey town of Hexham.

Or why not discover the hidden and overlooked gem of the North Penines AONB with some of, if not the best moorland scenery, its just up the road. Wrap up your day with a visit to the award winning and historical Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland; definitely our favourite place for supper or a drink in the Crypt Bar.

Finally we are a great base for weddings at Healey Barns (2 miles)
