"You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me." - C.S Lewis.
Our guest room has both unlimited tea (or coffee) and hundreds of books.
It is light and spacious and has a private bathroom. French doors look out over pool and the Paparoa Ranges.
Must love pets - our friendly beagle, Eager, and cats will make you feel at home.
Note the check in time is 5pm because I work during the day. But do ask if you'd like to arrive earlier - we can often be quite flexible.

Our home is large and comfortable. It is furnished with an eclectic mix of new and an antique furniture and artwork. Built in 1930, it has been modernised but retains some art deco features.

Best of all, it has a library of great novels for you to curl up and read while you're here. Everything from New Zealand fiction, to popular fiction and classic literature, as well as novels from around the world. A good selection of non-fiction and magazines, too. We also supply daily papers - The Westport News and The Press. If you want to borrow a book, we'll supply a postage paid bag for you to send it back when you're done.

There are lots of great spaces in our 3/4 acre garden for quiet relaxation. You're also welcome to help yourself to fresh vegies from the garden - salad leaves, herbs, fresh peas, radishes, zucchinis and tomatoes are on their way for summer.

You are welcome to bring your own dog, cat or budgie on holiday with you but please note the property is not fenced. Eager is good with other dogs and the cats will make themselves scarce.

The guest veranda door opens out to the swimming pool - perfect for a dip on a summer's day. The veranda has an outdoor table and chairs. Sunblock and bug spray provided.

The fire will be roaring in winter.

Our family has a relaxed and friendly hosting style and we hope you'll feel at home at our place. You are welcome to use the kitchen and living areas. Oil, herbs, spices and all utensils are available for you. The top shelf of the fridge will be clear for you to store food. A continental breakfast is provided or Pat can prepare a full cooked breakfast (omelette, classic big breakfast or pancakes) on request for a reasonable charge. It's great to have a chef in the family!

Being nearly 100 years old, our house is always a work in progress - it has its quirks and cracks. But we promise it will be comfortable. Some things we never skimp on: the bed will be made up with 1000 thread count sheets and the towels are high quality cotton.

We are on a sustainability journey - buying local and fair trade products wherever we can. Locally made jams for breakfast. Coffee locally roasted and ground. Eggs are free range and locally laid. Fresh milk in glass bottles from a local exchange. Cleaning products from NZ social enterprise Will & Able, which creates good jobs for Kiwis with disabilities. We're not perfect, but we're working on it.

Bridge players are welcome - Dad and I both play Monday and Thursday nights and our small friendly club loves meeting new players.

Apho uza kuba khona

Westport, West Coast, New Zealand

The house is in a quiet spot on the outskirts of town. About a 20 minute (1.6km) walk to the main street, and less than 10 minutes to the Buller River and the start of the Kawatiri Coastal Trail.
You can also drive to many beautiful walking tracks, beaches, the Cape Foulwind seal colony or the Denniston Coalfields in under half an hour.
Westport is nestled between three of New Zealand's most popular hikes - the Heaphy, Paparoa, and Old Ghost Road trails.

Ngexesha lokuhlala kwakho

I'm a reporter and work during the day but am always available by phone.
My father, Ray, and son, Jack also live in the house.
There is usually someone at home if there's anything you need but the house is big enough to allow for privacy.
