Located by the shores of Loch Seaforth on the wondrous Isle of Harris, the Old Mission House is nestled in the crofting hamlet of Maraig, framed by the beauty of the North Harris Hills. Sleeping upto six guests, the house enjoys direct shore access and panoramic views from every room. It’s the perfect place for family or friends to gather; an ideal retreat for lovers of peace, beauty, nature and wildlife, offering ever-changing sea & mountain vistas & excellent walking right from the front door.

Indawo
A former manse built in the 1880s for the local parish minister, the Old Mission House is now a cosy, period property offering welcoming holiday accommodation for groups of upto six.

Downstairs the convivial kitchen-diner and comfortable lounge (with log burner) are the perfect place to unwind after a day’s exploring or relaxing at the beach (or to plan your next day’s adventures!) while upstairs, three bedrooms (two doubles with kingsize beds and a twin with two full-size singles) offer restful spaces for a good night’s sleep. Three bathrooms (one en-suite shower, one first-floor bathroom and one ground-floor shower room) help avoid family disputes!)

GARDEN

The house is blessed with a mature, characterful, private garden with direct access to shore of Loch Seaforth. Between house and loch, the sloping lawn has gate access directly to the waterside, while a stream runs along the garden’s eastern edge. During the warmer months an outside table and chairs on the patio are just the place for alfresco dining (or an early-evening drink or two!)

A YEAR ROUND DESTINATION

Graced with an enviable coastal setting, the house is a magical place year round. In winter, cosy up by the log burner and (if you’re lucky!) admire the snow-capped surrounds with a tot of single malt; in autumn look out for wildlife (eagles, otter, deer) and enjoy the lovely, low light - a photographer’s dream! In spring, be charmed by newborn lambs on the neighbouring crofts and in summer make the most of direct shore access from the garden with a loch-side picnic (and a Harris Gin and Tonic of course!)

For wider exploration you’ll find yourself perfectly positioned for discovering the best that Harris and Lewis have to offer. Strategically located at the centre of the landmass with easy access to amenities and the ferry in Tarbert (10 mins) attractions across the islands all lie within easy reach - be it the famed west-coast beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost and Huisinish or the marvels of Lewis’ 5000 year old Callanish Standing Stones!

THE ISLE OF HARRIS

Famous the world over for its breathtaking scenery and mesmerising beaches, the Isle of Harris needs little introduction. Captivating year-round, its natural beauty, tranquility and unique Gaelic hospitality make it a bucket list destination for many. Located in the Outer Hebridean archipelago, 40 miles off Scotland's west coast, getting here is part of the adventure - those who make the effort won’t be disappointed; the weather may change, but the sense of wonder will never leave you!

MARAIG

The charming crofting hamlet of Maraig can be found on the east coast of the Isle of Harris. Nestled into a valley beneath the peaks of the North Harris Hills, a winding road leads its way down from the main mountain pass that connects the isles of Harris and Lewis. Streams and small waterfalls abound as watercourses find their way from hillside to loch-shore.

This is excellent walking country. The Hebridean Way hiking path skirts the township, while the celebrated Urgha-Rhenigidale-Maraig route is on many a Harris hiker’s bucket list! Clisham, the archipelago’s highest peak (at 799m, really a Corbett) rises up behind the village, while ascending on the south-side of Loch Mharaig (an inlet of Loch Seaforth) the distinctive Todun provides a simpler, if no less rewarding option! That’s not to say much shorter rambles can’t be had - with beautiful views in every direction an easy walk along road or shoreline is always an enjoyable choice.

It’s worth remembering too that Maraig provides an excellent base for touring Harris and Lewis; strategically located at the centre of the landmass with easy access to amenities and ferry in Tarbert (10 mins) few attractions across the islands are more than an hour’s drive away (and most significantly less!) The famed beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost and Huisinish are just half an hour to the south and west; while the marvels of Lewis’ 5000 year old Callanish Standing Stones lie forty five minutes north.
