If you’re looking for somewhere to escape from the hustle and bustle of the tourist side of Kathmandu then my home is the place for you! I live in a residential area of Kathmandu and my home, being built to modern specifications, is earthquake proof.

A relaxing place to stay where you can unwind and enjoy the real Kathmandu. Jamuna’s place is in a residential part of Kathmandu, built to withstand earthquakes, it was not damaged in the recent earthquakes of 2015.
The room is large and bright with windows on 3 sides and a balcony. Clean linen is provided including towels. The bathroom is opposite and is shared with room 2, although there is another bathroom downstairs for guests to use too.
In addition, outside the bedroom is a large roof terrace in full sun, above this is another roof terrace for guest use and for drying laundry, from here the Himalayas can be seen on a clear day. Guests have full use of the downstairs garden and the garden swing seat.
Guests have full use of the open plan living and dining room and can prepare snacks in the kitchen. A simple breakfast of bananas, porridge/muesli, eggs, toast and tea/coffee can be taken on the sun terrace in good weather with minimum charges. Evening meals of traditional Nepalese food is also available on request including fresh vegetables from the garden, this is 5Euro per night per person.
I have a washing machine and it costs Euro2 per load to cover costs.
Books are available to read, exchange etc. and wifi is provided throughout the house.

I can arrange transfers to and from the airport, price available on request, and will provide you with a local map and information to make sure that you get the most out of your stay.

Apho uza kuba khona

Kathmandu, Central Region, Nepal

I am situated just 4 km from Patan Durbar square which is bigger and more beautiful than Kathmadu Durbar square and less known by tourists. This sacred area is a favorite with local people.
Patan will be your nearest tourist area when you stay here, although Thamel is easily reached by taxi and bus. In the Patan area you’ll find shops selling beautiful handicrafts including bed covers, fabrics, clothes, ceramics and soft furnishings. In addition Patan is the area where Nepali people go to buy Thanka’s – handmade Tibetan paintings and crafts celebrating the life of Budha. This is the central area of the Newari people – the cast that I belong to. Newari are people of the Kathmandu valley and are known for their distinct ancient architecture, food, culture and language. I am always pleased to explain some of our culture and traditions to guests and to point out the best places to get Newari food and to experience the many festivals.
Shopping is a gentler experience in Patan with fairly trading shops showing fixed prices so that you know what you should be paying. Quality rather than the mass market is the aim for the shops in Koupondole such as Dhukutti, Mahagutti and the 3 sisters from Dhankuta.
A little nearer to home is the busy trading area of Jawlakhel where you can buy good quality Nepalese carpets which are often at a better price than in the more popular tourist areas.
Just outside the house are a few small shops where you can buy fresh chicken, milk, vegetables, simple toiletries and other essentials. There is also a barber shop at a very cheap price. A 10 minute walk away is the lively Bhainsepatti bazar where there is a Eurpoean bakery selling granary loaves, croissants etc.
In the evening there is the local restaurant, and 2 garden restaurants cooking fresh Nepali and European style food.
A small supermarket, places to buy and drink beer etc.are in Bhaisepati 5 minutes walk away, here the buses come every few minutes to jawalakhel and towards Thamel and the centre, the fare is around 25cents (Us) 15p (Euro). There is also an ATM machine and banks.
At my place you can be as active or relaxed as you wish. I can help you with places to explore and visit.
A very pleasant half day trip from the house on foot can take you to visit 2 different villages, one of these is the Newari village of Bungamati which is well known for its Temple and traditional wood carving that can be seen on many of the Kathmandu temples. This village was affected by the earthquake but the crafts people are still trading out of temporary buildings and restoration work has started.
Khokana village is also just half an hours walk away and is famous for producing mustard oil which is the main cooking oil in Nepal. This is done by pressing mustard seeds. This village was also affected by the earthquake but the old style of architecture can still be appreciated. Here you’ll feel more like you are in the Nepali foot hills rather than Kathmandu and you’ll walk by rice fields frequented by birds of prey and, if you wish to buy local crafts from these places you’ll be supporting them in their recovery from the recent natural disaster.
I can also advise you on how to get to all of the main Kathmandu tourist areas, e.g. Bhaktapur and Swayambunath monkey temple.

I have traveled in Europe and Asia and love to meet people from around the world. I speak Nepali, Newari, Hindi and fluent English and am always happy to chat with guests but also appreciate that you may want to come here for a quiet time.
I will provide you with my own map of interesting places as well as written details of where I live so that you can hand this to bus and taxi drivers etc. I will advise about buses and how to get to places on foot – Kathmandu is not too big so walking is always an option. I will share with you my inside knowledge so that you can enjoy Kathmandu as a local!
I have experience of providing Nepali conversation classes to Europeans and Americans and this can be arranged if you would like to learn some simple but useful phrases for during your stay.
