This is the one of a handful of restaurants we’ve been returning to for more than ten years, both for excellent dinners and soul-satisfying brunches of dim sum and pho. Nothing could keep Chauncey away from this place’s catfish claypot dish. Nothing. They knock modern Vietnamese food out of the park. Generous happy hours and a new, great rooftop deck are things to take advantage of.

Renee Erickson is a local star chef who has been opening hit restaurants, each beautifully designed and exalting Pacific Northwest cuisine, for many years now. Her restaurant group, Sea Creatures, is writing a new, exciting chapter for Seattle dining. Bar Melusine is an ode to the oyster halls of Brittany, France. If you like oysters, eat your heart out (and order the Westcott Bay oysters!).

This place specializes in natural wines (which Emily is a freak about). Regardless of whether you are on the natural wine bandwagon or not, the food is pretty damn good here, especially considering the couple of hot plates and limited counter space they have to work with. Melrose Market, where Marsielle is located, is a great place to explore as well.

Damn. My mother is an upstanding woman who runs her own business, but anytime she’s visiting and we find ourselves in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, she gets as insistent as a cranky toddler until her itch for some Molly Moon’s salted caramel ice cream is scratched. Well, Chauncey took Emily here for dinner on her very first night in Seattle in 2005, and the rest is history. This place rocks! Set in the center of the Pike Place Market, this Seattle institution has a beautiful atmosphere - including a gorgeous patio that is the only place to spend a lazy afternoon on sunny Seattle day - delicious Italian/Pacific Northwest food, and excellent entertainment EVERY night, from music to trapeze artists. Reservations are recommended, but you can always try to get a seat at the bar. The linguini vongole and caesar with Dungeness crab is a perfect combination. If you like great old-time jazz, catch Casey McGill and his band on Wednesday nights.

Entertainment & Activities

Seattle held the record for most movie theaters per capita for a very long time (rain and movies go well together!). Many of these movie theaters are/were architectural gems built in the first half of the 20th century, and we’ve been going through the pain lately of seeing these disappear one by one. The Egyptian is one of the few that are still standing and kicking ass.
