CLOSED after decades. Outside it looks tiki, inside it's a cozy dive bar with cocktails, some sports on TV, and at the right times, some good live jazz

This is a new place in the neighborhood (post-pandemic), a 5 minute walk from home, with good BBQ (all kinds of smoked meats and soul food), a great bar, and live music 4 nights a week! And the owner Mark is really friendly and really wants to create a showcase for the neighborhood musicians.

Parks & Nature

This ribbon park cozies up to the City College campus, starts at Alexander Hamilton's home, and the greenery is beautiful, and it runs along the hill, so you can meander or get in your little hike as well. There are areas to picnic or just sit, basketball and handball courts where you can join in a pick-up game or just watch. And the best part is that it's less than 5 minutes walk away

This park runs most of the length of the west side of Manhattan. It's great to walk along the paths, relax alongside the Hudson river, enjoy the soccer/futbol fields and other sports facilities (especially in the 130s), you can find shaded or open-and-sunny areas to lounge, on the grass or on the benches. And if you're feeling energetic, walk up to the GW bridge for a treat - the little red lighthouse is a favorite secret spot.

This park around the Medieval/Renaissance fort is probably the most beautiful park is the city (or one of them), and I've visited several. It has a gorgeous view over the Hudson river, and Rockefeller kindly bought the land on the other side as well, keeping it preserved and forested. The park offers several free sports and nature classes when weather permits, has a medieval/renaissance style fort (which houses the Cloisers Museum), a nice restaurant, and lots of areas to walk around in, admire flowers or hiking paths. Just gorgeous!

So affordable, very friendly (and slow) service in this cafeteria-diner-style place, with a few tables. Try their fabulous pineapple-ginger juice (and I don't even like pineapple), if you're there early enough in the day. Their jerk chicken and other meats come in S- M - L size portions and the medium is always more than I can handle.

Yummy ethiopian food - gluten free and vegetarian options, great service. You eat with your hands and get to try all kinds of dishes, spice or mild, hot or cold. If you've never had Ethiopian food before, it's like exotic tapas served on a spongey pancake called injera. This place is cozy and casual, and a 12 minute walk away.

Delicious Italian pizza, made the "real way" ie in a wood-burning oven (I grew up in Italy and this is serious stuff ;-) ), albeit with a few atypical combos. Good pastas and other dishes as well -- even some gluten-free-friendly! They have lunch deals, weekend brunch with unlimited mimosas/bloody mary's, and indoor/outdoor seating.

The best coffee! Take a few steps down intho this artsy-laid-back-hang-out kinda space. Really friendly service, delicious light fare and baked goods for breakfast, lunch or snacks. And they have open mic nights for budding comediens and musicians. It's nice to hang out there, in the outdoor "shed", or take it to go and wander the neighborhood.

Some guests went and LOVED it. So, after walking by several times and admiring the wood-paneled, cozy, wildflowers-on-the-table ambiance, I too finally enjoyed brunch there with a friend. It's a fun and funky, laid back place. They've got great coffee, brunch, and booze, and a Jamaican to English, etc menu, plus friendly service. It's a nice find, along a beautiful avenue in fun, funky Harlem. NB: it is not welcoming to children

This is cheap, but yummy (a little greasy) Chinese take-out, and somehow they have kept the prices low all the decades they've been here. One large dish is sufficient for two people... They hustle, and the food is good (not sophisticated good, but NYC diner good)
