Trails
We are just a few blocks walk from Forest park and Macleay Park. Below are descriptions of both. You can access them both from trailheads near the Audubon Society on Cornell Road where there is also ample parking. For the adventurous, you can take the upward-leading staircase on the right from where NW Fairfax Terrace turns into Westover Terrace. This takes to Cumberland, turn right and go one more block to Luray Terrace, turn right and take Luray Terrace to the end where you will see an opening onto the Wildwood Trail.
The "Alltrails" app is also very useful for discovering what all there is to offer in hiking around Portland:

There are also many amazing trails just outside of Portland, like the Trail of Ten Falls: https://www.oregonhikers.org/field_guide/Trail_of_Ten_Falls_Loop_Hike
Forest park can be accessed from the NW Cumberland street entrance. Just walk down NW Fairfax Terrace to the first intersection and then walk up the steep set of stairs (King's Heights Stairs) turn Right onto Shenandoah Terrace then slight left onto NW Cumberland and follow this to the trailhead.

Public staircases leading down into town
There are numerous public staircases that make the trip down or up the hill faster and more pleasant. I list some here with our home as starting point, but do check out this blog for a photo documentary version of the staircases in the NW Portland area:
