It is shaped like an inverted pyramid. Architects of this project were Štefan Svetko, Štefan Ďurkovič and Barnabáš Kissling and it was completed in 1983. The project began in 1967. The building is 80 metres high and has a concert hall with a large concert organ.
The building was included in a list of the 30 ugliest buildings in the world, but has been defended by Slovak architects.

The gallery in Bratislava consists of a complex of buildings. The central building was originally a four-wing baroque residence on the Danube embankment (hence its name: the Water Barracks) built in 1759-1763 (designed by architects G.B. Martinelli and F.A. Hillebrandt). This was later reconstructed and an extension was built (1969-1977; designed by architect V. Dedecek) to meet new requirements.
