Shapwick Heath, Somerset
The soggy peat moors of the Somerset Levels are like catnip to wildlife. Part of the Avalon Marshes and preserved by Natural England, Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve, six miles west of Glastonbury, attracts 64 species of bird, including great-crested grebes, bitterns and Cetti’s warbler, one of Britain’s loudest songbirds. But it’s the otters splashing about in the reeds that are the biggest draw. In winter witness the nightly starling murmuration — thousands of the tiny birds perform their mesmerising aerial ballet at twilight.
