Great time to go is early in the morning, right when they open since there are fewer people so it's more relaxing and you can enjoy the solitude. Weekday evenings tend to be less congested. This is about 1 1/2 hours north. Clam chowder is awesome. If it's winter, give yourself an extra half hour. The winter road out can be very slick and frost heaves that sneak up on you, so drive with caution. Typically lots of moose on the road.
