Sightseeing

Wonderful, south facing walled garden, with imaginative fruit tree training and a great range of plants, shrubs and borders. The cafe is also a great place for a coffee and a snack. Eggleston Gardens are about 1.5 miles walk along the railway line from the cottage.

Unique architecture and great art and artefacts, together with a decent cafe. Great for a rainy day or for something a bit different, especially if you like French-style architecture!

Neighbourhoods

We would recommend two main walking paths in the village. The first follows the old railway line that linked Barnard Castle with Middleton-in-Teesdale, and which will take you to the nearby picturesque village of Romaldkirk (about 1.25 miles away) and ultimately up to Middleton to the West. Easy, mostly flat walking, very close to the cottage, and a great way to see the nearby scenery. The other path we recommend takes you from the confluence of the Balder and Tees rivers at the Hagg (path directly opposite the Fox and Hounds pub), over the river via the footbridge along the northern side of the Tees down to Barnard Castle. This scenic walk is about 5 miles in length, and there are reasonably regular buses coming back to Cotherstone from Barnard Castle if you're too tired to walk home!
