Food Scene

While an Indian/Southern mashup might not sound so obvious, don't let it put you off! The food is great. Particularly worth trying are the samosas.

It's Obama's favorite diner. Need I say more?

This place can be painfully hip (for book-ish Hyde Park, at least), but the food is great and the drinks are awesome. The playlist is eclectic, and it's easy to spend hours working, reading, or just people watching.

Drinks & Nightlife

The Promontory has a little bit of everything: great food, interesting drinks, awesome music and performance groups, and a cool, diverse crowd. Come for dinner and stay for the evening entertainment!

Jimmy's, as those in the know call it, has been a Hyde Park staple for decades. The beer list is solid and the patrons run the gambit from graduate students to loyal patrons of many years.

Arts & Culture

One of Frank Lloyd Wright's most iconic designs, the Robie House is a great stop while touring the University of Chicago. Tours run pretty often, and you'll learn something about Wright, Chicago, and architecture that you never knew before!

Parks & Nature

I honestly believe that Promontory Point has the best view in the city. The best part is, it's under the radar for most city-dwellers, so you can easily get your fill of peaceful calm and serenity (or a good run) while barely seeing another soul. The view of the skyline is a don't miss.

While grocery options have been popping up all over Hyde Park, this little place is still a hands-down favorite for many. The produce is great, the selection is interesting (in a good way!), and the people are probably the friendliest you'll ever have checking you out.

Yes, it is related to the Powell's in Portland. I haven't been to that one, so I'm deeply biased, but the Hyde Park Powell's is my favorite place in the world to buy books. Because of it's location in the university community, you can find some very interesting reading material, and the price is right!

Entertainment & Activities

Harper Theater belongs to an old style of theater where the tickets are cheap, the seats are comfortable, and the theaters are small. And clean! What's there to dislike?
