Welles met his companion Oja Kodar while shooting his film The Trial in Zagreb in 1961. Since that time he was a regular visitor in Croatia, bought a villa near Primosten, and visited Split several times. When Split businessman and former mayor Zeljko Kerum built the Joker Centre, he ordered a statue from Kodar to bring some cultural spirit to his shopping Mecca.
