If you are visiting north Cornwall or Tintagel castle while you stay then I suggest here for your lunch! Book ahead and if the weather is good request a patio table out doors.

The calm south coast beaches at Falmouth are lifeguarded and safe for swimming. You won’t get the surf of the North coast it’s much calmer. Go by train from Truro or drive it in 25 mins. The town has pretty shops to explore. Take a drive or walk up castle drive stopping for an icecream at the top. The three main beaches ( Gyllynvase, Maenporth and Swanpool) all have excellent beach cafes.

Pack a picnic, cross on the King Harry Car ferry and visit this beach which is a family favourite with us. Very calm waters and a big beach at low tide. Pitch up at the top of the beach because at high tide there’s very little dry sand!

Sightseeing

Stunning views a great beach and a fab cafe. Free to park for National trust members. TBeach only accessible at low tides so do check! Get here really early in peak season to get a car space. It’s worth setting an alarm for.

The wide Mount’s Bay always has space even in summer ( although as always in Cornwall get there early for a parking space or late in the evening ) at low tide you can walk across the causeway to the castle on the island ( national trust) , or get a boat at high tide , grab a pasty or chips at Marazion village or I recommend the Godolphin arms which I’ve listed in this guide too.

Our closest beach 15 mins drive. You can stop on Beacon drive and walk down from Wheal Coates for stunning scenery or park at the bottom in the national trust car park. But I love to park up in the winter with a flask of hot chocolate candy watch the waves.

St Ives, with its 5 beaches is my favourite place in the whole world. Famous for the colour of the sea, the artists light the beaches and the town. It has wonderful shops to explore. Great places to eat. Boat trips. Icecreams and you can spend all day here and not see half of it. Parking most days is almost impossible so what I do is drive to St Erth transport hub ( 20 mins but allow more time peak season!) where you can park and get the train in. It’s the most gorgeous coastal branch line ( sit on the left hand side in the direction the train is going for sea views for almost the entire 15 journey) once off the train it’s a 3 min walk ( 10 with young children!) down onto the beach. From there a 15 min stroll takes you into the seaside town. You can of course catch the train from Truro which is good fun but requires changing to the branch line at St Erth.

An English Heritage sight this is a little over an hours drive from the Milestone on a clear run. But you could stop at the town of wadebridge on the way where you can hire bikes and cycle the camel trail or get a coffee if you’re less athletic! It’s famous for King Arthur but it’s a steep climb so not for the faint hearted. I recommend a back back rather than a buggy for small children. Amazing views and all very intersections. Have included guide to the Port William pub at nearby Trebarwith if you want a good pub lunch with views. My standard Cornish summer warning. If you’re here in peak season expect queues for parking unless you’re early and book in advance.

A typical Cornish fishing village and harbour. Porthleven is about a 45 min drive on a clear run. It’s on the Lizard peninsula. I would recommend going on to Gunwalloe and Church cove from here. Especially if you’re a Poldark fan. I’ve popped a guide to that under a separate heading.

National trust property just ten mins drive from The Milestone ( follow your satnav you don’t need to go back through Truro) it’s a lovely drive there through country lanes then if you are not a National Trust member you have to pay to park but there are super woodland walks. Entry to garden recommended if you are. Tea rooms. Shop. Toilets and lots of car parking.

When exploring the Roseland Peninsula then it’s fun to cross on the King Harry Ferry. It runs every day with a crossing every 5/10 mins. Great for a quicker trip to St Mawes, Carne, Veryan, Pendower. Crossing the Fal river this way saves you having to drive all the way up to Tregony to cross the road bridge.

40 min drive from The Milestone almost at Penzance this is not as well known by tourists and so can often be quieter in the summer months. There’s lots to explore and see and a check list guide of the exhibits you can work through. There’s lots of walking and uneven ground so not easy if you have mobility issues or a stroller. Views are amazing and there’s a cafe, toilets and gift shop plus a gallery. We like to take a packed lunch and see if we can nab the treehouse to eat! If it’s been raining recently then wear wellies. Easy to pass all day here but you could team it up with a swim in the jubilee pool or a trip to Marazion/Penzance.

This is our families favourite place to beach and my favourite place to wild water swim. The beach is large and life guarded. The tide comes up very high so pitch your spot at the top if you are going to be there all day. There are two large car parks ( expect to pay up to £10 and please note they are cameras controlled and will fine you even if you go over time by as little as 2 mins 😐) public toilets ( 50p) and a great beach cafe serving pizzas, wraps , pasties etc in peach season there's also a cliff top sauna and a great coffee van. We like to take portable BBQ's and make a day of it pa king up breakfast to eat there as soon as we arrive. Clear waters make it great for snorkelling and you can book paddle board/surfing lessons there. The shop sells beach toys, wet suits, icecreams and snacks and just a 5 min easy walk around the coast path brings you to the mermaids pool , a natural sea pool very popular with wild water swimmers. I absolutely love it here and we often come even on cloudy days and picnic on the grassy green over looking waves or enjoy a coffee from our car with great views. It's about a 45 min drive to get there but very much worth it and I recommend coupling it with a trip into padstow where you will find Rick Steins fish and chip shops, lots of souvenir shops and harbour and great pubs/restaurants.
