Food scene

The Riverton General Store is the best place to get a sandwich and a bag of chips, or a ice cream in the summer, or a cup of hot soup in the winter. Whether you are looking for breakfast, a local beer (canned) or a locally crafted cutting board, the General Store it where you’ll find it. You’ll probably meet Leslie who owns the place and is a great neighbor. Say hi for us!

The Royal Coachman Tavern makes delicious food. Eat on the new outdoor patio, or walk over to pick up take out. Either way, it’s a 60 second walk from the house. My personal favorites are the: burrata, nachos, beet & goat cheese salad, fish tacos, and any of the specials. Cherise is the owner and she is wonderful!

First: visit Coffeeology Street Cafe's Espresso Bar, our new local barista! Stop in for a latte or a specialty coffee drink of your choice. Having a real barista walking distance from home has been a game changer. Joe & Jess are the coffee experts and proprietors. While you sip your caffeine, stroll around and shop at dozens of vendor stalls from independent, local businesses covering three floors in this historic building. Bryan and Billy are the owners

Only open on Saturdays from 9am to 12pm, this gem is worth marking your calendar for. Jason and Theresa and their daughter operate this adorable and classy “farm stand” that puts out the best scones around. They also have amazing muffins, tarts, local eggs, home made soaps, and other boutiquey home goods (gifts for family and friends from your vacation in Riverton?). The Farm is about a mile up Route 20 from the house. If you walk, go carefully: cars come fast down the hill. If you drive there is plenty of room to park along the road.

Orchard Hill Baking, right in the center of town next to the fire house, bakes delicious breads, cookies, and brownies. We highly recommend the sourdough sandwich loaf for toast and sandwiches (we go through at least one loaf a week). Say hi to Joan, the business owner and lead baker, and/or her daughter Nell when you stop by!

Not walkable, but just a short 10 minute drive away. Surprisingly good Lebanese and Mediterranean fare. Try the hummus.

Outdoors fun

Our home is located along a stretch of the Farmington River that has earned the “Wild & Scenic” designation. It is beautiful, clean, teeming with wild life, and offers many recreational opportunities. If you are into fly fishing you likely already know our stretch of river. Also great for tubing and kayaking.

Miles of hiking to be enjoyed just down the road. The trailhead for the Jessie Gerard trail and the Waterfallcut off is 1.8 miles down East River Road. The hike to the Chaughams overlooks is not too long but the view payoff is huge. Marked as “Barkhamsted Lighthouse Archaeological Preserve” in Google maps.

Hanging Mountain lays in the small, southwestern Massachusetts hamlet of Sandisfield, just three miles from the Connecticut border. The WMCC owns 14 acres of mountainside and jointly manages the area with Connecticut’s Ragged Mountain Foundation through a Joint Stewardship Committee. The RMF split the purchase of this parcel with the WMCC, creating the only climber owned area in Southern New England. This approximately 1000-foot-long series of southeast-facing cliffs, ranging from approximately 60 to 240 feet in height, contains granite, granitic gneiss, and large pockets of friable schist. As the name may suggest, portions of Hanging Mountain can be unstable, at times shedding significant amounts of stone: wear a helmet, especially when belaying, and expect to encounter at least some loose rock. Please check out the WMCC website for more information.

Enjoy this 1.9 mile loop trail just 1.7 miles from the house. This very popular trail is especially spectacular in the Spring when the wildflowers are blooming, but it’s great the rest of the year too.
