The hectic, colourful Athens agora (market; also referred to as the Varvakios Agora) is the highlight of the vibrant Athinas market district. It’s a sensory and gastronomic delight, with an amazing range of olives, spices, cheeses and deli treats. The historic meat market, with hanging carcasses illuminated by swinging light bulbs, is a surreal highlight. The tavernas in and around the market are worth seeking out.

The tiny ouzeri-fish restaurant called Lesvos will make you think you are on that island. It's open day and night and can get very festive as often happens in places where people from Lesvos gather to drink ouzo and eat fish.

Oxo Nou, which translates into dont worry, relax, is a casual, friendly restaurant with a menu based on Cretan specialties and very reasonable prices. All ingredients are shipped over from Crete, famous for the quality and taste of her products. Students, artists and residents in the neighborhood appreciate the delicious dishes, which include interesting salads with ingredients such as smoked pork, pomegranate seeds, baked potatoes, aubergines, mountain herbs. Definitely worth tasting are the big fried potatoes with salt and oregano, staka (cream of butter), barley rusks with olive oil and fresh tomatoes, traditional Cretan pie with courgettes, potatoes and cheese, the famous gamopilafo (rice boiled in goat broth), cockerel with homemade pasta and many more local delicacies, prepared with attention to every single detail. Wine and raki (a very strong distilled spirit, tasted in tiny glasses) are also from the vineyards of Crete.
