This is where you go when you want to skip the usual Tex-Mex fare and have an amazing modern Mexican meal. The place is owned and run by women well known in Dallas for their talents, including the cocktail guru Leann Berry who knows more about margaritas than anyone! Truly--try one of their margaritas!

THE iconic and ironically-named dive bar of Dallas. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights (and any other time someone gets the whim). This place has been around forever, and draws an extremely eclectic crowd. Most of the seating is at picnic tables outdoors, and there are lots of fire pits to cozy up to when the air is cool. The food menu is not extensive, but they DO specialize in GREAT burgers!

As if the Alamo Drafthouse theater was not enough crazy fun, the upstairs restaurant/bar is not to be missed even if you pass on a movie. Special cocktails, good food, and the BEST view of downtown Dallas from its balcony seating.

Voted one of the best bars by D Magazine, this place gets its name from its intention to serve bartenders, waiters, chefs and others 'in the industry'. It has a pool hall/game room in the back but the atmosphere is very chill. The patio is perfect for clandestine conversations, but my favorite spot is on the couch under the nudie paintings. These bartenders know it all--I challenge you to try to stump them!

Everything Else

What's a neighborhood without its own brewery? This is where the well-known local beer is brewed, but there is also a tap room with food selections, an outdoor area to hang out in, and the most interesting dessert of all--chocolate tamales! You will definitely want to get a photo of yourself sitting against their fun outdoor art wall.

Just about a mile away is the gigantic KBH Convention Center. Many conference attendees enjoy staying at the Cedars Nest to take a break from the convention atmosphere when their day is done.

Shopping

A 26,000 square foot food hall and artisanal vendor market with multiple varied restaurants, a mixture of local specialty foods, artisanal food vendors, and seating areas both inside and out. THIS is where you will find some of the best gifts and souvenirs! On weekends the adjoining Shed is open as well, with tons more interesting vendors in addition to fresh produce.

Getting Around

Just a couple of blocks' walk, and you can catch a train going to the events at the American Airlines Center; the Arts District (Pearl Station); the Convention Center (about a one-minute ride from the neighborhood!). However, for weekends and evenings, eFrogs is the best and most fun way to get around in the Cedars neighborhood, downtown, and Deep Ellum! You simply text them your location, number of people going, time of pick up and destination point. There is no cost; you pay by tips only. Bikes are also available for rent in the neighbor, and can dropped off just about anywhere in the area.

Parks & Nature

A 5.2 acre deck park (meaning it is built over a highway) that is conveniently located in the Arts District of downtown. There are endless free activities--dance lessons, walks, tai chi and yoga, croquet, chess, music... Food trucks offer gourmet "fast food" but there is also a very fine restaurant, the Moody Plaza, if you want to go a bit more upscale. This is THE park to just hang out, relax on the lawn and people watch while pretending a read a book.

The Nasher is home to one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary sculptures in the world. The lawn with its many areas for sitting and reflecting is a favorite place of mine (I've been known to take a nap under a tree, in dappled sunlight!) Always with new or rotating exhibits, but there are also occasional events such as educational classes or movies on the lawn.
