The Riverport town of Goolwa is steeped in history and is the first town in Australia to be accredited as a Cittaslow town. Cittaslow is a whole of community approach to promoting quality of life and sustainability in towns and cities based on a partnership between local government and communities.
Goolwa was once a thriving river port - the last on the Murray River before it reached the Southern Ocean.
It was the only place in Australia where paddle steamers and steam trains met to carry produce inland and for shipping overseas. However, the spread of railways to inland Australia put an end to the river trade as Goolwa's importance as a port.
Did you know??? Goolwa is one of only two places in the world to offer a unique steam-to-steam experience... with PS Oscar W, a 110 year old authentic paddle steamer and the Steam Ranger, a historic passenger steam train.
