The first stone building built, instructed by the commissioner who later became first Governor of the Cape, Isbrand Goske of the Dutch East India Company.. 1966-1979
A beautiful example of a Bastion Fort. It marks the original shoreline before more land was claimed changing the Table Bay coastline.
Jan van Riebeeck arrived in 1652 & left the Cape in 1662. The original fort was a clay & wood structure. his successor Zacharias Wagenaer was instructed to build a stronger fort.
As there were In renewed rumours of war between Britain and the Netherlands in 1664 and fears of a British attack on the Cape, the Lords Seventeen instructed Wagenaer to build a five-pointed stone Castle similar to other such fortifications in Europe and the East. The Castle was planned around a central point – a water-well under the “Boog” – with five bulwarks known as bastions.
Three hundred sailors, commandeered from passing ships, soldiers, local Khoikhoi, women and imported slaves were used as workforce.

After a short explanation, you and your pilot will take off from a mountain slope of Signal Hill under a canopy that resembles a parachute. Once inflated overhead, you will take just a few steps or a short run to take off from the gentle slope, the wind will catch the canopy and you will be airborne. In the air, complete control over direction and speed gives your pilot the freedom to soar ridges, rise on warm currents of air and cover distance.
Great safety record so it's extremely safe and all pilots are highly trained.
