Magnetic island is only a 20min ferry ride from the city. You can take your own vehicle or you can hire a moke or catch the public transport on the island.
There are many bays and beaches to explore Horseshoe Bay would be the most popular as it is very protected from the wind and has a lovely pub and restaurants to eat at or just have a drink. There are a few shops to have a walk through and the beach is a great place for a swim.
