One of the world's most important gannet rookeries, the Reserve is approximately two hours by car from Salmon Cove. A unique feature of this site is how close visitors can get to Bird Rock where all the mating, egg-laying, hatching occurs. Perhaps most astonishing is how the gannets plunge into the sea to capture the fish that they bring to their fledglings on the cliffs. These birds actually pursue their prey under water. And early in the summers, the Reserve is also a prime place to watch the gathering of the whales that forage on the massive schools of migrating capelin and cod. The Reserve is part of Canada's national wildlife parks. Every summer, the Lighthouse at the Reserve hosts musical performances, story-telling and other cultural treats. You are advised to inquire directly from the Ecological Reserve for the dates of these events and to inquire of any COVID related restrictions and requirements (attendance, masks, etc.).

Castle Hill is about a one hour drive from Salmon Cove. It looks over Placentia Bay and the town of Placentia. first settled by Basque fishers in the 1500s. Castle Hill is the site of Fort Royal, one of three established in the area by France in the 1600s. From 1662 to 1713 it was France's New World capital, before moving it to Louisburg, N.S. and later to Quebec. Today a national historic park preserves and interprets the ruins of the fort and its history, including the story of King William IV, who stayed several months at Fort Royal in 1786 after England took control as part of the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht (1713). City/town information

Brigus traces its European settlement to 1612 by arrangement between the island's first official European settler John Guy and another settler. Over the centuries Brigus became famous for its succession of adventurous navigators, including Capt. Bob Bartlett who successfully sailed Admiral Robert Perry to his 'conquest' of the North Pole. Controversial American artist Rockwell Kent (b. 1882; d. 1971) lived in Brigus early in WWI. His house is still standing and restored. Brigus is a distinctly picturesque town exuding history through times both of prosperity and hardship. For today's visitors it offers varied dining and craft shopping venues. There's a hiking trail to a navigation light that only the physically fit should try (1 - 2 hours round trip) that offers stupendous views of the historic harbour and town. A visit to Brigus can easily be combined with one to nearby Cupids.
