Caldicot has always been an important transport point. It was on the Roman road from Gloucester to Caerleon, hence the growth of nearby Venta Silurum, the largest civilian settlement in Roman Wales. And these days, it’s the first town visitors see when they arrive in Wales via the Second Severn Crossing.
But don’t pass through; stop and take a closer look at town and country. Make sure you pay a visit to Caldicot Castle and Country Park. Just up the road pop into the hidden gardens and grottoes at Dewstow or see the fantastic Roman remains at Caerwent.

Peering between the ridges of the Llanwenarth, Deri and Rholben hills, the Sugar Loaf is one of the highest peaks in the heart of the Black Mountains. It stands at 596m high and offers glorious panoramic views across South Wales, the Brecon Beacons, and into south-west England.
Its conical shape is reminiscent of a volcano, but the mountain is made of the same old red sandstone as the rest of the Black Mountains.

a must-see destination by the 18th century (as part of the Wye Tour along the river), the abbey has inspired poems by William Wordsworth and Alfred Lord Tennyson and paintings by JMW Turner. Tintern has touched the World in many ways. It was the centre of industry for hundreds of years - conservation work has revealed that there were countless forges and furnaces along the Wye and its tributaries in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Brass was first made in Britain at the Abbey Forge and it was the first place to make wire on an industrial scale, most notably the first transatlantic cable was made here.

Symonds Yat
Fantastic for accessing the river
This fortified baronial palace stands majestically on a red sandstone crag, commanding the passage of the river Wye into the picturesque wooded valley of Symonds Yat. Much of the stone used was quarried from the rock around the base of the castle, creating a deep moat.
