Food Scene

Delicious, cheap, home-cooked Polish takeout food. Fresh vegetables, stuffed cabbage, pierogies, borscht, cabbage slaw - it varies daily. Also excellent breads.

My favorite neighborhood restaurant. Genuinely friendly people run it. BYOB (in American: Bring Your Own Booze) They only make a few things, but they do them very well. Nice backyard.

Not just a bakery, they have delicious, affordable Polish comfort food for take-out during the daytime including fresh vegetables, which is a rarity. I think their pierogies are the best in Greenpoint or Williamsburg. But really, everything there is good. https://www.yelp.com/biz/northside-bakery-brooklyn

WEEKDAYS ONLY. Dates back to before Williamsburg was gentrified. Filling, inexpensive Polish food. For breakfast, eggs and potatoes - or try challah french break and kielbasa. You'll go into a food coma, but it will have been worth it. http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/kasias-restaurant/

You can't visit NYC for the first time without trying dim sum for weekend brunch. It's incredibly cheap, totally delicious, and fun. Expect large crowds and a wait. The crowd is part of the experience - you will share a table with some strangers. Chinese ladies who don't speak English walk around pushing carts full of food; you point to what you want. At the end, someone will add up your bill and you'll be amazed at how small the total is. Go on the early side if you want a shorter wait. This place has recently been crowned the best in Manhattan: http://ny.eater.com/2016/2/9/10953224/nyc-joy-luck-palace-review-dim-sum-mott

Brand new - it opened in Sept. 2016. The view is incredible. Go before sunset to catch the sunset turning the Manhattan skyline brilliant pinks and oranges. Drinks are expensive (though not more expensive than average for a nice place in NYC), but you only need one. http://gothamist.com/2016/09/29/westlight_rooftop_william_vale.php http://westlightnyc.com/about/
