Stroll past German architecture on Main Street. The town’s German-style architecture, complete with half-timbered houses and even a small clock tower at Fischer’s Market, is immediately eye-catching. There are many German towns in Texas, but perhaps none is quite as obviously German when strolling down Main Street–and that includes famous Fredericksburg!

In addition to historical displays, the museum is also home to a research room for those looking to investigate the history of the town or its former inhabitants. The Muenster Museum is open on Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If the museum happens to be closed when you visit, be sure to still stop to check out the antique farming equipment displayed on the lawn! In addition to being interesting, the Muenster Milling Co. is visible in the background, and when we visited, it was busy churning away. It’s quite the juxtaposition to capture both the modern mill and antique equipment dating to Muenster’s early days in one view!

Outdoor activities

Hunting
Fishing Cover/Structure There is standing timber uplake and in Farmers Creek. Shoreline vegetation can be found in some areas and there are many boat houses on the lake. These features furnish excellent cover for fish. Rip-rap along the dam provides excellent habitat for bass and sunfishes. Tips & Tactics Nocona is a big largemouth bass lake. Bass can be caught year-round. Spring fish are normally shallow, building nests in the cattails or under boat docks. Tube baits fished slowly can land a big bass. When fishing spawning beds, remember catch and release. She deserves the opportunity to reproduce and after all, she will be bigger next year! After the spawn, aquatic vegetation starts to grow and bass move out of the shallows to the edges of the vegetation. This is a good time to wacky worm or throw soft jerk baits. On into summer, top water baits and buzz baits will produce lots of action early and late. In winter and early spring, big bass can be caught deep on rocky ledges near the dam. Crappie on Nocona are big and can generally be found schooled around the many boat houses and sometimes in the standing timber or up Farmers Creek. Jigs or minnows work. Catfishing for both channels and blues is best in June when the main stream or feeder branches are flowing. In summer, fish crawfish, stinkbait, or liver over windswept flats. Let the wind push your boat along as you keep the bait on the bottom. White bass fishing is best in the spring when they make a run up Farmers Creek. As with most lakes, sunfish are best caught near the bank around brush or grass, using worms under a cork.

Fishing Cover/Structure Lake Amon G. Carter is actually two lakes in one. The original lake was constructed in 1956 and has different habitat than the 500-acre extension constructed in 1985. Habitat in the old lake is characterized by rocky shoreline, main lake points, cattail beds, and some standing timber in the upper end. The new lake is characterized by lots of standing timber and some weed beds along the shoreline. Both parts have rip-rap along their respective dams, providing excellent cover for fish. The 20-foot tunnel that joins the two lakes also provides good cover for some fishes. Tips & Tactics The best time to catch largemouth bass is in the spring and fall. These are two very different lakes. The old side stays muddy and the fish stay shallow. Start with a pumpkin chartreuse tail worm and white/chartreuse spinner bait. Key on rocky points and boat docks. The new side is normally clear with a lot of brush and timber. If you are looking for a big bite, stay in the new lake and drag a Carolina rig with a june bug or blue fleck worm. Catfishing is great in June, especially if there is a little runoff from spring rains. Channel catfish like to feed in flowing streams or along windswept shoreline. Use live crawfish in these areas or try drift fishing chicken livers or blood bait across open flats near creek mouths. Channel and flathead catfish can be found almost any time, just about anywhere on this rocky lake. Flatheads like live bait such as bluegill or other sunfish, but channel catfish prefer punchbait. Crappie are best in the winter/spring when they school tightly for spawning. Jigs and minnows fished around standing timber is a sure bet. Many local anglers target crappie in the old lake which has lots of submerged brush piles, especially around boat houses. Jigs are best with stained water, but get you a bucket of minnows if the water turns muddy. White bass are relative newcomers to this lake. They school at the surface chasing shad in the summer and early fall. Try trolling with a medium diving crankbait that mimics a shad. Sunfish or bream are best in the summer when they congregate around brush, boat houses, or piers. A small hook baited with a live earthworm topped with a sizable cork is a sure fire way to fill your creel with bream. Good eating, too.

If you’re looking to do a little fishing in the plains of North Texas, head directly to Muenster Lake! Fish habitat structures have been placed around the fishing T-pier near the boat ramp. These can attract bass, crappie, and sunfish. Dense standing timber is located throughout the reservoir, providing excellent structure for suspended fish. Rip-rap along the dam also provides excellent habitat for bass and sunfish. A few submerged pond dams and creek channels also hold fish. Tips & Tactics Bass may be caught suspended in timber or along drop-offs in summer at or above the thermocline which usually sets up about 15 feet. In spring, bass will be in shallow water and soft plastics will work well. Bass will stack up in the creek channel in winter in the deepest water and may be caught on deep diving lures or flukes. Crappie can often be found suspended in the standing timber near the original creek channel and may run upstream towards the creek in spring or in shallow coves. Jigs or minnows may work well. Channel catfish can best be caught on punch bait fished on the lake bottom in summer. Sunfish can be caught fishing with worms around rip-rap or the fishing pier.
