Sightseeing

Picnic Bay has a long jetty with a covered area at the end from where you can see Townsville. Great for a leisurely stroll there is usually a good breeze and you can see fish over the side. There are a few places to eat including a pub along the shore front which also has a cool, paved area shaded by huge trees. There is also a stinger net up during stinger season but still wear a stinger suit as irikandji can get through.

Horseshoe Bay has a totally different atmosphere to the other areas on the island. There is a stinger net up during stinger season (the big white rectangle) along with lifesavers. Be sure to still wear a stinger suit as Irikandji can get through the nets. The water at horseshoe is generally much calmer. There is a good fish and chip shop for takeaway only - eat at one of the tables on the beach and watch the sunset. Markets on a Sunday from 9am to 12 noon between Easter and Australia Day.

Wildlife

The helipad is located at the end of Kelly Street out on the breakwater. It is a nice stroll and here you can find heaps of the local Rock Wallabies - they to tend to blend in with the rocks.
