Walk/Hike

This park is located about 1.5 miles on the same road as our home. It is an off leash dog walking area with some slight hills. Many people choose to run in this area as well and there are mile markers. Our dog loves all the smells and there is a bit of a view of the mountains in all directions when you are on top of the hill.

There is a map of the national park in the top drawer next to the refrigerator for your convenience. The entrance to Shenandoah National Park is approximately 5-10 minutes from the location of the house. This house is exit 96 off I-64 and the park is exit 99. There is an innumerable amount of great hikes in the national park. One of our favorites that is pretty close by is Turk Mountain Trail. It provides a beautiful view but it is a moderate trail with a small rock scramble at the top. Dogs should make it up just fine. A “must do” trail for hiking enthusiasts is Old Rag Mountain Trail. This is a hard hike that will take most of the day so be prepared. Dogs are not allowed on this trail and it is a bit further away (though a beautiful drive there). Word of caution: we highly recommend getting acquainted to hiking rules and laws and we suggest bringing bear spray for your safety as black bears do frequent the area. Download the AllTrails app for all of the hikes with more information. Entrance for a single vehicle (as of 2021) is $30 while an annual pass to the park is $55. There is no cost per person. There is also an option to purchase an annual park pass that will get you into all of the national parks. There are several days each year where entrance to the national parks is free! Check their website for details.

You can either drive (plug it into the GPS) or walk to this park by taking River Road all the way down. The river runs through this park as well and our dog loves to swim here too. There is a playground and a public pool (for a fee) in the summer months.

One of our favorite local places is The French Press in downtown. It has a neat little vibe and WiFi.
