There are plenty of touristy shops in Port A to get T-shirts and beach gear, and most of them sell the same stuff. Bo Jon's stands out and has a great selection of clothing, bathing suits, t-shirts, and other fun trinkets that are a bit more special.

If you are planning to be in town for a week or longer, then I highly recommend signing up for one of the surf camps. They even do daily private lessons, if you don't have time for the camps. They have lessons and camps for kids and adults of all ages.

A nice new HEB, and the very last stop before heading out of Corpus and onto the island. I highly recommend stopping here to pick up groceries for your trip. The local grocery store is not as nice and is a bit more expensive. You can also order HEB groceries to be delivered to the beach house for a $20 delivery charge. It's worth it, considering its about 30 minutes from the house.

Reserve your golf cart ahead of your trip
There are many golf cart companies in Port A, and most are great. Everyone wants a golf cart when they visit for driving onto the beach and all around town, but they go very quickly. We have made the mistake of waiting too long and not getting a cart in time for our trip. If you know you are coming to Port A, reserve your cart ASAP!

Walk, golf cart or car
You have lots of options for getting around in Port A. Our house is centrally located within walking distance to the beach or in town. Most visitors choose to travel by golf cart when in town or going to the beach. You can also go onto the beach with your car, but you will have to purchase a parking pass from the local Stripes gas stations or the IGA supermarket before parking your car on the beach. They are only $12 for the whole year.

Bringing the kids
Our home is a great place to bring the kids, but there are a few things to note:
We don't have any baby gear such as: high chairs, baby gates, cribs, or pack-in plays. We have had several guests use a local service called Baby Quip that can provide and deliver many of those items.
Our pool is gated with a child safety lock. Just lift up on the lever before opening the gate. Please make sure to keep the gate closed at all times and to monitor your children when swimming.

Beach Safety
The beaches in Port A are great for swimming and usually have mellow waves. Be sure to check the flags and warnings that are posted daily at all the beach entrances.
Occasionally there will be warning for rip tides. Please take these seriously! Also, we have experienced the odd jellyfish in the water and have been stung. The good news is that there is an easy way to cure it. Bring some vinegar with you in a spray bottle and pour or spray it on the sting site. It will instantly help to feel better. Coldwater makes it worse, so beware!

What you should bring
Life is simple and pretty casual on the island. Most importantly, bring your bathing suits and flip-flops! Many people like to bring a picnic and cold drinks to the beach with them during the day, in which case a cooler will be helpful. We provide beach towels for you, but you may want to bring some folding chairs for the beach as well. Sand toys, floaties, life jackets, boogie boards, and small fishing nets are also fun. All of these items can be found at any of the local stores in town if you don't already own them.
