Our very own Lamar Heights is a metro Denver suburb in Arvada Colorado. The neighborhood is close to i70 so it provides easy access to travel throughout the state. Denver is ten minutes West and the foothills are about twenty minutes East. If you prefer to walk, downtown Arvada has plenty to offer without the crowds of the city.

NCAR laboratory's visitors center has fun and educational tours that are especially great for families. The laboratory was designed by the famous I.M. Pei and constructed with local pink aggregate so it blends with the scenery beautifully.

Brainard lake is a popular spot, just an hour and 15 minutes from the house, for beginner day hikes or picnics. This is a glacially formed valley is the entrance to Indian peaks Wilderness. Make sure to reserve your parking pass online before you go for Brainard, Long Lake, Mitchell, or Niwot trailheads at the government recreation website.
My personal favorite, Long Lake Trailhead, is just 1.5 miles long and mostly paved making access easy for all mobility types. I love to take a quick a cold plunge in this scenic lake at the end of the trail. Most of the trails do have residual snow until late July so wear closed toed footwear and expect some mud and snow patches throughout.

I love to take a quick a cold plunge in this scenic lake at the end of the trail. Most of the trails do have residual snow until late July so wear closed toed footwear and expect some mud and snow patches throughout.
Rifle Falls is a hidden gem about 3-4 hours drive from the house in New Castle. Four stunning falls cascade down limestone cliffs into crystal clear pools below. On hot summer days, guest can cool off in shallow limestone caves just next to the falls. This is an accessible spot for all mobility types and is very family friendly.
Parking cannot be reserved prior to arrival so I prefer to go early and beat the traffic on I-70. If the primary lot is full upon arrival, you can park outside the entrance in gravel pull-offs to wait or save the $10 parking fee and walk in for free. Lot turnover is usually quick since this isn't a hiking spot. If you prefer to enjoy a hike into the park, travel about 1.5 miles past the state park entrance to the Riparian Zone. Follow the signs and cross the bridge to the bobcat trail. The hike is just over a mile and is great for beginners and families. I love prefer hiking in to see wildflowers and spot wildlife along the way. It can get hot in the summer so bring plenty of water.
