Candleston Castle was built as a fortified manor house in the later part of the 14th century. The lands of the manor later became covered with dunes and thus making them valueless. The dunes are now quite famous and popular with athletes, who come from all over the world to train on this very tasking terrain. ‘The Big Dipper’ being the most difficult and sort after dune for these athletes.
As you drive toward the Candleston car park, you travel through Merthyr Mawr village. The pretty thatched cottages makes this village possibly the most chocolate box village in Wales. Before you get to Candleston car park, there is a road on the left that takes you to a small car park where you can cross a small white footbridge that takes you over the River Ogmore towards Ogmore Castle and it’s stepping stones.
Get back in your car and drive to Candleston car park, there is a small fee to park here. The castle is on the left hand side of the car park, through the trees.
The dunes are also a popular place for picnickers and sand sledging.
