41001 NC-12The Avon Fishing Pier is a Hatteras Island landmark, attracting fishermen from all over the country who want to try their luck at reeling in one of the notoriously large red drums that make seasonal appearances.
The tallest living sand dune on the Atlantic coast is a premier location for kites, sightseeing and sunsets, with a view arcing from the ocean to Roanoke Sound. A visitor center with museum and 360-foot boardwalk with exhibits explain the dune’s ecology and are a gradual entry to the massive dune field. Hang gliding lessons are available through a vendor in the park. Shoes and sun protection are recommended.
The soundside access of the park is a different experience offering sunbathing, wading, paddling, and a one-mile nature trail that opens onto wetlands, grassy dunes and maritime thickets.

Best 12 Layer Cake. It may seem crazy but the Kevin's Store gas station has coffee, sandwiches, and the best desserts. Cindy's Kitchen is actually a shop next door, which is just a kitchen. Her husband owns the gas station so she sells her cakes out of it. It is a hidden gem that should not be overlooked! Our favorite cake is the yellow cake with chocolate icing, there are many others but we can't seem to stray from our favorite!
