It really is a secret in part because it's only open seasonal during the winter, only serves weekend breakfast and daily lunch, and it's a little hidden, but worth finding. Sightseeing
A small, really small town in Mexico. The crossing is the exit (if you noticed) the Quechan casino off Int 8. It's only abt 5 minutes from the highway. There's never a line to cross into Mex, but sometimes there can be a long line to cross back into the states, either by auto or foot. There is a parking lot (for fee) next to border. If you want to visit Mex, but don't want to deal with big city, Algodones is very safe. There is generally more snow birds there than anybody else. It's a great place to find a dentist, orthodontist, ophthalmologist, or dermatologist for relatively inexpensive (compared to U.S.). Some just cross for a taco and a few bottles of cheaper booze. Be sure to check on boarder hours as they sometimes close earlier than expected.

City/town information
Phoenix is AZ's state capital and 5th largest city in U.S. It has all that you could want to do shopping, eating, activity wise, including many sporting events, including baseball spring training for many professional teams, theater, ballet, music events, etc... Phx has similar weather to Yuma (although, they claim to be cooler. Scottsdale is beautiful and full of shopping and excellent restaurants. My favorite is old town Scotts Dale. Phx is about a 2 1/2 hr drive, so you can do a day turn around, but it would be a long day. You'd have to get up early, have your day well researched and planned out, and have designated driver that won't fall asleep.

The historic district is my favorite place to visit in Prescott, because of it's quaint atmosphere and unique shopping and good food. They regularly have events and festivals in the district and at Christmas they decorate it with a gazillion lights. It's beautiful. A must see if at all possible. Snow is possible in the winter, so have chains to be safe. It's too far if a drive for a one day turn around. It takes just under 4 hrs. one way. I usually go the 60 w. route. If you make it to Prescott, Jerome is an ex-mining town that is now a creative artist's town. It's very close to Prescott, just under an hour away. It is so cool. The town is perched atop of a steep mountain. On some streets it feels as if you're going to fall off the mountain. Worth the hour drive.

The grand canyon needs no introduction from me. It's too far to do a day turn around given it's about 6 hrs away. If you haven't been, it's beyond an absolute must. I'm always shocked!! When I meet people from AZ who have never been. What? That's crazy. That's like saying you've never seen the ocean. It's a bucket list item for sure. If you've never been, go and stay in Williams. Williams is this little one street town with tons of hospitality and charm that caters to grand canyon tourists. Then take the grand canyon train from Williams to and from the grand canyon. It's the same train that the Polar Bear Express cartoon / movie is based on. If you go around Christmas, they even run a polar bear express each night, but that has to be booked well in advance and it ain't cheap. I've always thought it would be so cool, though.

The picture says it all. It's breath taking. Next to the Grand Canyon, it's the second most gotta see natural wonder of AZ. It's pricey to stay the night, but, unfortunately, it can't be done from Yuma in a day trip as it's about a 4 1/2 trip one way. If you ever make it that far, especially if it's winter, take an extra 45 min to visit Flagstaff, home of NAU. If you're lucky, you'll catch it when it's snowing (which means chains are advisable in the winter). Flagstaff even has skiing; I don't know how good it is, though.

Last but not least is Tucson, which I have done in a day turn around from Yuma. It was a long day, but it was doable. I've not spent a lot of time in Tucson, so I can't really recommend anywhere specifically to visit, but what I can tell you is the city has a unique college town/city vibe (they sort of seem like an in between size). They've got cool restaurants and bard abound and everyone just seems chill.

This is where I grew up. Like Phoenix, it's about 2 1/2 hours away, but in the opposite direction, and, unlike phoenix, you will have to travel over about mountains about 3,500 feet in elevation over some twisty-turny roads (car sick anyone). During the winter it does snow in the mountain. It is doable to do a day trip to Mt. Laguna to visit the snow, but, beware, they will probably require chains. Near Mt. Laguna is Julian, a quaint mountain town that is know for it's apple orchards and apple pie. Like Phoenix, SD can be done in a day turn around trip, but it's exhausting. Especially because San Diego has so much to see (I mean, come on, the beach alone). To do SD justice, it really should be done in a two day trip minimum, staying at least one night. Depending on what you like to do, down town is fun as well as the waterfront, including Little Italy, which has a great farmers market on Saturday (I believe). There's The Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Balboa Park, Old Town, Sea World, the Del Mar Race Track in the summer, and every weekend has a full calendar of events.
