Fantastic lunches and home bakes run by a friendly Maltese lady. The only place I've found up here that will serve warm bread while you're waiting for your lunch. It's the little things that make a difference.

Probably the best food in the local area-a bit pricey-but worth going early for a cocktail .

Fordyce is a picturesque village-spend an hour wandering its streets then tuck into some delicious locally sourced fare. Lobster salad and chips with a cheeky Sauvignon Blanc you say? Well, it would be rude not to.

This is a wee cracker of a place I stumbled upon by accident. Run by a couple from Aberdeen who take a real pride in their service and adding in extra touches. I thought I had tried every sconnery in the local area but no! This blows every other fancy piece establishment out of the water! Visit the Lighthouse Museum (did you know the bloke who invented AGAs accidentally blinded himself inventing Lighthouse, er, lights..) OR take a walk along the magnificent toffee-coloured sand dunes.

As my good friend says, ' there's nothing a Portsoy Ice-cream can't make better.' Well maybe not genocide or Brexit....but it is on a par with Lucas of Musselburgh, possibly even better. Enjoy it down at the film-set pretty harbour.

Let's face it, you'd be pushed to find a bleaker spot anywhere but if 'dark tourism' is your thing then this is a great day out. Contemplate the futility of your own existence as you stare through the bars out into the ominous North Sea. It's cold, it's creepy, it's blooming FASCINATING. Scotland's very own Alcatraz.

Walk off some calories around the forest trails before carb-loading again in the castle cafe. Life's all about balance eh?

Insta-friendly shots of the Bow Fiddle rock and a stunning coastal trail which takes in both a set of vertiginous steps hewn out of the rock single handedly by a local zealot. I can't decide if I am more in awe of it or the slightly disturbing pet cemetery you pass on the way. Mrs Perkins RIP.

The lovely pottery lady makes beautiful lamps, jewellery and many special things. 'Watergaw' is the Scots word for a watery rainbow and, well, you'll see why the name was chosen when you go there. I have a few pieces at Hansdale.
