There's a new(ish) owner of this longtime cafe and the food is really good these days. A strong cajun influence. Also the owner, Collin Doran is a great guy. He gives breakfasts for free to people in need. (He receives a Chris Kindness Award, which is another cool Berkeley thing to know about). There's usually a wait on weekends, but reasonable on weekdays. A proper breakfast place with good spuds and eggs and baked goods and fruit. Always a good selection done well and it's the best closest place for breakfast.

Shopping

BERKELEY BOWL - 2020 Oregon St. The Berkeley Bowl is an institution. Started in the 60's as a food coop-op in a former bowling alley, it is still owner-operated and just about he best shopping experience anywhere in my humble opinion. It's a very good combination of having everything you need in one place, but it has all the locally sourced, organic, alternative, stuff you could want (But along with name brands and less expensive foods for the price-conscious). A huge produce section and a great bulk foods section. good beer and wine and breads. It's worth a trip. My home being so close to this resource is one of the most life-enhancing aspects of living here.
The Berkeley Bowl is a collectively owned market that is superior to the chain markets like Safeway in every way. The produce selection is better, the y have both cheap options and the most up-to-date hipster versions of everything, plus the folks who work there are not exploited, friendly, co-owners. One of the true successes of the 60's era alternative economies that has versions around the country, usually in college towns - though few have achieved the commercial success and scale of the Berkeley Bowl. Plus it is the closest place for food shopping.

also a fine shopping experience. They generally beat the Berkeley Bowl here for the produce freshness and price, but they are more expensive in everything else. It's a neighborhood store and the aisles can get cramped, but still worth it. plus there are the other shops in the area making this one of the last remaining shopp ing areas with independently owned shops.
