Sightseeing

Bryggen is one of Bergen's and Norway's main attractions. Bryggen was built after the great fire in 1702 and is included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The very first buildings in Bergen were situated at Bryggen, which has been a vibrant and important area of the city for many centuries. Bryggen has been ravaged by many fires, the great fire of 1702 in particular. It reduced the whole of the city to ashes. The area was rebuilt on the foundations that had been there since the 12th century, which means that Bryggen is basically unchanged despite the passing centuries.

The Fløibanen funicular in Bergen is one of Norway’s best-known attractions and the only railway of its kind in the country. Fløibanen runs from the centre of Bergen to the summit of Fløyen in 5-8 minutes, and the journey is an experience in itself. The journey starts at the lower station, in the heart of Bergen, about 150 m from Fisketorget – the fish market – and Bryggen wharf.

Are you curious about the seafood and would like to buy and prepare something yourself? Go to Lerøy, instead of The Fish Marked. The quality and the price is normally better at Lerøy. If you have problems finding a good selection of grocieries in the supermarkeds and especially high end grocieries, Lerøy might also be your place.

Arts & Culture

Grieghallen represents the top of the market in staging cultural activities, mainly classical music concerts and operas, but also other concerts and arrangements. One of the world’s oldest orchestras, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, are often playing in Grieghallen. Edvard Grieg had a close relationship with the orchestra, serving as Artistic Director from 1880–82. Edward Gardner assumed his new position as Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in October 2015, and is recognized as one of the most talented conductors of his generation.

KODE is one of Scandinavia’s largest museums for art, craft, design and music. The museums stewards almost 50,000 objects ranging from paintings, works on paper, sculptures, installations, videos, musical instruments, furniture and works of fine craft and design. These objects can be experienced in four museum buildings in Bergen city centre (KODE 1, 2, 3 and 4), and in the homes of the composers Ole Bull, Harald Sæverud and Edvard Grieg.

Saunas

Outdoor saunas have been more and more popular in Norway the last few years. This one is one of my two favourites in Bergen. The contrast between the cold water and the hot sauna (this is normally around 90 degrees), does something good for mind and body.
